When you use your telescope on a ship it shows their level - those shown in red are a higher level than your ship. Those in white are ships you should be able to attack and defeat. As you upgrade the Jackdaw your level will increase allowing you to challange higher level ships.

I've already got most upgrades aside from elite, guess I'll have to get back to wanted lvl 4 to get a man-o-war to be spawned. Frigates I can handle, but that was a bit to much (before I got on a nice spot with frequent brigs and frigates)

I think the elite upgardes do pack quite a punch. If you look on the right of the upgrade page it tells you how much the upgrade will boost you - the big number in the cirlce is the total fire power of that weapon and the smaller number below the circle is the amount of increase, so you can see some give quite a percentage upgrade.

Also try to hit with a mortar as your first attack move.

I also didn't realise that the broadside cannons were just a LMB click to fire. When you use the RMB + LMB to fire, that is just the small shot that you are firing. I didn't work out that until quite a way into the game !!

Well...I've found a new problem, hunter frigates firing 4 volleys before reloading....

Actually, LMB is a thing called 'heavy shot' it uses ammo (it says how many you have left as a number next to the three cannonballs in the bottom-left corner of your screen when you turn the camera to the side of the ship).

So far, I've only gone to wanted level 1 - Think I'll worry about the level 4 hunter achievement once I've finished the main story !!

But I have beaten a level 60 man-o-war as I have it in the Kenwood fleet.

Oh yeah, that's the name.

And there you go, that's something else I've just learned - that is shows the remaining shot count. Thanks, I'd obviously been too busy fighting to notice that !!

Well, the difference between wanted lvl 2 and 3 is quite steep. On wanted 2 you get a Brig and a schooner as consort. Which are quite easy to take down, the Schooner is one chain shot and the Brig is ramming it and then a broadside. On wanted 3 that's a brig, as a consort to a Frigate. Lvl 4 is a Man-O-War with a Frigate as consort.

Not really a great joy finding that out when you're just messing about and not getting any hunter ships -.-

Try looking up ship battle strategies. I like pelting Man O' Wars with mortars. I don't have near all the upgrades yet. I do have decent mortars though. I can take one down without taking a single hit, if they're alone.
You don't really have a Brig, it's more of a Frigate. But honestly, it's all about skill. Man O'Wars aren't that bad once you get better, especially since they can't maneuver very well and you can see where their mortars are going to land to avoid it.

Nope, it's a brig where you start with. Yeah, when you've got 40+ guns it counts more along the line of a frigate rather then a brig.

Already searched for two. The 2 Man-O-Wars sitting next to each other, left them alone, and then the ramming one which was pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up because of how fast that one is, couldn't even outrun/ship it.

One does not simply outrun El Impoluto.
