Ally pirates - what/who are they ?

Occasionally I will see a blue dot while sailing the seas. The map legend just describes them as 'ally'. Does anyone know for sure what they are ? I guess they are other Uplay friends who are playing the game at the same time. Would just like to know for sure if that is the case.

A couple of times I've gone to help them out in a battle and it's not always gone so well for my ally !!

Those are just random ally npcs in the world. not the best or most useful of allies but they are useful for a distraction

OK, thanks. I once saw one battle a ship 4 times its size. I tried to help but in doing so I set off my hunter status so bailed to fight the hunter. I dealt with that just in time to see the ally sink !!

Not everybody can have a battlebrig like Captain Kenway. The British breathed a sigh of relief after realizing the Spanish could have been the ones to unlock the Jackdaw's hidden power instead of a relatively unambitious pirate.

They are color coded so you know they wont fire at you and you don't want any accidents with them to avoid desyncro. They can also provide fire cover by getting caught in enemy crossfire. Gunsmoke can get so bad you'll have to adopt a plan to deal with it.
