Question about VAC, from a disabled gamer
Hi, I don't know where to ask...I'm a disabled gamer, I have extremely weak muscles and I was interested in buying Dying Light, but sadly, because of my disability, to play some games, I have to use Autohotkey macros..I'd love to play it but I don't want to risk buying the game using autohotkey gets me vac banned...I've wanted to ask if someone knows if it's okay to use Autohotkey in singleplayer?

VAC is something that applies to online servers, and scans clients that connect to these secure servers by checking their gamefiles and searching for known cheats.

I imagine if you set your game lobby to private, VAC will automatically disable or you can manually do so.

Plus Autohotkey stuff should never be seen as cheating by VAC in the first place if it only serves as keyboard inputs.

In case you read this first, I will copy paste my answer from your subreddit post here.

It's alright to do whatever you want in Singleplayer, you won't get VAC banned no matter what as long as you either:

1. Play in Singleplayer, you can ensure this by setting your game into Singleplayer in Menu > Options > Online > Game Type
2. Do not join VAC secured games, this means pretty much avoid joining people who are either host, or playing with host who have VAC Secure Game option set as Yes in Online settings.

Now, as long as you intend to play alone in Singleplayer, all you simply have to do is set your Game Type to Singleplayer, and you are done. You have 0% chance of triggering VAC, but it gets a bit complicated if you decide to play Co-op / online.

Each player has option to permanently enable / disable VAC in their Online settings.

Each player also has ability to become host of game, by setting their Game Type to either Friends Only, Public etc, then invite another player.

If you are host, you won't trigger VAC as long as you set your VAC Secure Game option in Online settings to off, even if you invite other players since everybody plays by host's rules, everyone you invite into your game has their VAC force enabled / disabled depending on whichever you have it set to, as host.

For example, if you are playing without VAC and invite a player who has VAC enabled, their VAC will deactivate as long as they stay in your game.

However, if you accept an invitation, or join somebody who has VAC enabled then your game will be scanned.

I also should mention that Dying Light's VAC isn't strong. Without an exaggeration, hundreds or maybe even thousands of people cheat (online) on daily basis and 99,99% of them get away without any punishment, this has been going for years and VAC ban rate for Dying Light at least known to community, is extremely low.

But you still want to take precautions and reduce chance of triggering VAC to zero % by doing these:

* For Singleplayer

1. Menu > Options > Online > VAC Secure Game > Set this to off - this will disable VAC.
2. Menu > Options > Online > Set Game Type to Singleplayer - this will lock your session to strictly Singleplayer

* For Co-op / Online

1. Avoid joining other player via Steam's Join Game feature, avoid accepting any invitations.
2. Only invite other players into your game.
3. Do not touch matchmaking, note that matchmaking will show matches based on your VAC setting, so you should be safe joining others using matchmaking if your VAC Secure Game option is set to off. However, there may be slight chance that this host you see in matchmaking suddenly decides to switch their VAC Secure Game option to yes meanwhile you are joining. So if you want to reduce your chances of triggering VAC to absolute zero %, you probably want to avoid using matchmaking altogether.

You will not get banned by VAC if you use AHK Scripts. I have used them for years in vac on and off to improve keybinding.

But if you really want to be safe, just keep VAC off in the multiplayer settings on the main menu.

Right! Thanks! Let's hope you are right!

Hey, I saw your reddit reply, but it was almost 3am and to be honest, I was too tired to reply. My apologies..
Thanks for your extremely detailed reply! I have absolutely no intention of playing Co-Op/Online, so I guess I should be safe no matter what I do?

That's great to hear, thanks!

Thanks everyone for your help! Let's hope you are right!

Yes, simply set your VAC Secure Game option to No and Game Type to Singleplayer and you'll be 100% safe.

I assume by now you have long since found a solution, but I'll still make an addition in case someone who's looking to find a way to handle the same problem reads through the debate. So here goes...

First of all, there's one thing that is required of you: You have to be able to play without seeking to acquire achievements, because you won't be getting any.
And here is why:

You have to play in offline mode and singleplayer mode only.

If you meet these two recquirements there is no risk of getting banned for using VAC when you play your games.

.........................

When that is said, I'd like to add one more thing: Your case is unique in that you have a need - not merely a wish - to use VAC when you play. If I were you, I would contact Steam Customer Support and describe your situation. Ask them to permit you to use VAC when you play the game without having to play in offline mode, since that way you will be able to enjoy the achievement feature like everybody else.

You shouldn't be cut off from taking full advantage of what Steam has to offer simply because you happen to be disadvanatged in a way that already makes your life more difficult than it is to the average player (and average member of society and of our species).

.........................

Best of luck, guys n' gals - disabled and so called "fully abled" alike. :)
