Molotov's are extremely effective against human enemies - make them, use them. So is spamming them with firecrackers - zeds are drawn to the noise and are happy to help you. Both are distance methods so you can keep back.
Also; just a reminder to use the environment to your advantage. There's 1/2 a dozen deadly things lying about to make your work easier. LP tanks, fuel barrels ( fuel spill + firecracker ), electrical wires laying around, steel spikes ( insta-kill ) among others.
Try not to get frustrated. Explore different tactics and think outside the box. DL is tough, but gives you a lot to work with.
Stanley has the right idea. Let the environment fight for you. Humans are trickier than zombies.
You can of course force the subject with the ol molotov(can't block fire). I would suggest using firecrackers to get zombies to attack them, but I assume this is in a closed off area.
Another thing is that humans don't have a lot of quick strikes, and those they do have are fully stationary. Most attacks where they wind up a swing and try to lunge at you are fairly slow. Their defense gets a bit soft if you swing as they try too, its a bit advanced but if you can get it down you should be able to land solid hits on most humans(they can still block or dodge, but certainly not as often).
Oh, and dodge. Prioritize it over actually landing blows on them, you can't force them to die faster than they can kill you so there is no point going in a berserk rage swinging as they are wacking you. You will almost always lose.
RUN Forest RUN !
What levels are you mrandoc (Survivor/Agility/Power)?
What skills and blueprints do you have?
What difficulty are you playing on?
Are you exploring to improve equipment:
Farm weapons (online codes, dockets from Bozak Horde, sleep cycle farming vendors, etc.)?
Finding blueprints (Korek, EXPcalibur, Ranger & Volatile Hunter DLC, Last Hope, etc.)?
Farming weapon mods (containers, vendors in The Following, Prison, nests, rewards)?
Farming guns before they lose power? Best to do this before Power level 8.
Advice in general (for various levels):
Get on high ground, use kicks, throws, and swings to knock off enemies, use Stomp alot if unlocked. Swift kicks burn NO Stamina, even on Nightmare, so get kickin'. Zombies can even act like lemmings.
Firecrackers and Molotovs work wonders. If a zed is looking at firecrackers, then they are wide open for attacks.
Save weapon durability for when it is truly needed, use other methods to kill instead.
Evade and travel faster, even when fighting or running on level terrain, by using the grapple hook. Grappling is a great way to re-position in combat.
Kick and throw enemies into environmental hazards, (off ledges, into spikes, deep water, etc).
If you find a gun, point it at melee based humans, don't even shoot, they will get the point.
Use shock puddles and light oil slicks on fire... lure crowds into them. Ignite pools with flaming weapon, ranged attacks, flares, firecrackers, molotovs, flaming zombies.
Loud attacks draw unwanted attention, this includes fire based melee on toxic zombies.
In another thread recently, some people were concerned about enemy scaling. This is tied to Crane's Survivor level. Just be aware it happens, so it isn't a surprise. A weapon that worked well yesterday, may need upgraded today.
If not mentally prepared for night missions, delay the climax of two missions: Airdrop in main campaign and Gaining Credence in The Following. If more XP or challenge is desired, then complete these missions ASAP for night time game-play.
Nights with Volatiles/Virals? Use UV light soruces, rain or Conductive Liquid, shock weapons. Conductive Liquid can also douse flaming zombies. Also, beware at night: Biters can transform into Virals, while Virals can upgrade, and sometimes there are super powered Volatiles (spikey looking) that can see through camouflage.
There are zombies that like to grab and bite Crane. They are either more durable, or have periods of quasi-invulnerability. Use skills, don't waste weapon durability on them.
The Following has new enemies. Some of the large soldiers can transform into ubber shocking virals. In general, the best weapon for them and all other normal size zombies, is the buggy. Shock Cage will even detonate Bombers at a safe distance, but it is mostly used to fend off Virals. Freaks of Nature are just super powered special zombies, but they are quite resiliant and dangerous... just use the same methods as usual, but repeat them until dead.
Volatiles stack up in "dark zones" during the day, and are replaced with normal zombies during the night. Timing can help make an area easier, or create an exciting challenge.
Propane Tanks: Melee one, pick it up and throw it fast. Melee one while running past and let it explode on anyone following. Detonate with ranged attacks. Place them on shock puddles and oil slicks. Throw them at a Demolisher and they explode on contact. Throw them at any normal zombie to knock them down. Set up chain reactions with larger tanks and barrels.
Combine skills, like Vault to setup for Drop Attack (there are other great combinations).
Camouflage with Camouflage Attack and Takedown: Snap necks without being detected.
Interrupt long recovery animations like Windmill with a swift kick on enemy or use grapplehook.
Interrupt bow animations with a swift kick in the air for a faster fire rate.
Grappling Hook, ranged weapons, firecrackers... use them to detonate Bombers safely. Use a shield to help defend vs. explosion. Dodge backward when they start heaving.
Use timing along with in-n-out tactics, especially vs. Goons. Backward dodges are very useful. Keep in mind though, ranged head-shots are safer.
Swift kick virals to interupt them, then attack. Back-up while attacking virals to avoid their flailing attacks.
Humans are uncanny at dodging. So, shoot them... it is hard to dodge a shotgun. If using loud weapons isn't a good idea, snipe with a quiet ranged weapon, or light them on fire so they are too busy to dodge. Too many high level human shooters? Explosive arrows are the answer.
Use weapons with faster attack speeds than enemies, like knives vs. Virals. The faster the weapon, the better suited it is for applying AoE crowd control (example: socking knives in rain, but it takes practice not to die from the AoE).
Use weapons with high Handling for improved Stamina economy. A huffing and puffing Crane is useless. If using larger high Stamina cost weapons... learn to pace actions and hit more than one enemy with each attack. This is all affected by skills and difficulty mode.
Aiming: Go for heads and necks, remove arms, strip armor. Example? Use the Melee Throw skill and two-handed weapons vs. Demolishers (aim for head after stripping helmet).
Shields wear out, but they can block ranged attacks. Elemental shields like those with Impact can send lighter enemies flying, which is great vs. gun toting humans.
Use skills a lot, examples: Dodge, Dropkick Bomb, Brutal Grapple, Vault Stun, Instant Escape, Reversal, Ram, Stun Kill, Multi-Throw, Melee Throw, Power Attack, Whirlwind, Conserve Weapons, Stomp, Slam, Takedown.
Some ranged weapons, like bows, have some odd effect like a fuzzy-aim, larger hit-box, or target assist. Aiming near or above a head will still hit the head. Meanwhile, the crossbow hits where being aimed, so it is easier to miss a wobbling head. The former is better at run-n-gun, the latter for sniping. Also, arrows have more spread off target due to wobbling of bow and arched trajectory, while bolts have tighter groupings.
Be aware that melee weapons of various types also have different swing patterns. Examples (one weapon and one skill issue): Katana is slightly diagonal, which hinders the ability to decaptitate multiple zeds in one swing. Meanwhile, a two-handed weapon used with Whrilwind, will miss the neck/heads, since Crane crouches down during the attack.
Weapon damage ratings are odd and misleading in this game. A few examples: Heatwave Crossbow lists less damage than a Ranger Bow, but on Nightmare, in The Following, the crossbow can one-shot a Volatile Nest, while the bow requires two shots. A 1.4k shotgun two-shots a Demolisher, but an upgraded crossbow will one-shot at ~5k damage. Even if using the exploit versions of Volatile Hunter Baton or Last Hope, it still requires two hits to kill a Demolisher. Meanwhile, upgraded Goons require up to 3 head-shots with a bow, 2 with crossbow... so somehow they are more resistant than Demolishers. In the end, learn what is best to use, and when to use it. As usual, this is all affected by difficulty setting, equipment, and Crane's skills/points.
Check youtube and Steam for guides. Here is an example:
Blade Master made a nice video, some of the techniques seem to need KB+M, others function with controllers:

Cool guide, cheers !
usually when they are around there are not as many zombies or the humans are in a fortified area where the zombies can't get to. so blast away (but still aim for the head to save ammo).
also, it should be noted that anytime you go indoors (ie the map loads to an indoors area) you dont have to worry as much about making noise. yes, if you start blasting away, any zombies in the building will starting coming, but the pool of enemies is much smaller and finite, so indoor equals weapons free zones.
i exclusively use firearms against humans (or my hunter bow which is the best weapon in the game hands down). i never bother with gunz against zombies. also dont forget, if you manage to knock a human over, headstomp kills them as quick as it does a zombie!
Dodge helps a lot but ultimately it just helps me live longer, it barely feels like I'm doing any damage to these guys at all.
I have to say after a super fun prologue section, this has been incredibly NOT fun.
I think this is the 1st or 2nd side quest you can find in the game. Seems completely out of wack in terms of the difficulty curve. In 4 hours of gameplay my death count looks something like:
Goodnight Mr. Bahir - 12 or so deaths
Entire rest of the game - 0 deaths
