The Slums - Crossing the gap in the bridge to military tents.
Does one have to climb that tower and use the zip line to cross?
Has anyone tried running to the end of the first section and using a grapple hook to cross?
The distance does not seem too far so I don't see why that should not work.

Grappling hook doesn't work there, it'd be too easy so it's designed that way. You have to either use Pyza Suit, zip line or swim to the towers on other side and climb up.

Blades right. Swim over , climb up the left hand side. Below you'll see two piles of bags. Your only way down is to jump down onto them. Using the Bow is extremely efficient for this area. Lots of useful loot and police vans.

Has anyone managed to get to the far side of the bridge, PAST this area?

FYI It actually possible to cross it using grappling hook to get over althought you will need jump from the bus near the edge then wait until you fall below the bridge and grapple up while mid air. Probably harder than pyza suit if you're not experienced with grapple hooks. I found this way easier, but thats just my opinion.

I keep my bow in my stash bag. Tried using it once when standing on a roof. Problem is when
those running zombies climb onto the roof the bow can't be used in close combat.

Update: Just completed Hardware quest. I stood on the military tents and used the bow.
Six arrows stuck in a zombie and they were still walking around. The bow is not for me,
well not by using normal arrows.

For future reference, throwing stars are quite effective and craftable. I like using the fire ones on occasions when the Bow isn't practical.

I did not use my exploding throwing stars as I felt the noise would attract more zombies.
