Witch Queen quest - easy I thought.
I was told that volatiles do not enter the cave where the mushrooms are, only a few normal zombies.
I waited until just before 9pm then swam in. I immediately started loosing health and as I got out the water I died, not a zombie in site.
Back at the safe zone I tried again. This time I killed all the zombies and collected 8 mushrooms, two to go. Suddenly the sound and message stating that I had survived the night
appeared. At that very moment a volatile in the cave grabbed me and I died.
Back at the safe zone, now day. Back for two more mushrooms. This time incident free.

I ALWAYS have the UV light and flares in equipment ready to go as soon as Jade or Alfie get on and talk about night coming.

If you wait for the night next to cave the volatiles apparently dont come out... You should go to nearest safe house and wait for the night by sleeping, and when you get to the cave there shouldnt be any volatiles. Atleast thats how I have done it 2 or 3 times I think.

I have waited quite near the cave until night, entered, no volatiles. (Note: if your minimap shows volatiles inside the cave, I suspect those do not go away when the night falls, they have already spawned inside, and will remain as long as you are near enough. At least in The Following DLC they seem to work like that in the nests).

Edit: Oh, when you have the potion, use it. (The quest will continue if you do so. It is worth it to drink all of the various potions when they become available until you finish the quest for real.)

I did wait at a near by safe house till 8.45 pm. Well that was my first attempt.
Dying twice I failed to check on the time.
Anyway, I must be the first person to ever encounter a Night Hunter in the cave and the first person to die while swimming into the cave for no apparent reason.

sleep at a nearby safehouse till night, by doing so the game "resets" and the volatile just dont spawn in the cave at all, done 4 times all 4 times worked, you hava a full 15 mins (on nightmare) to go and get mushrooms so you can take your time

In my case the volatile did not appear in the cave during the night. It was only the moment
I received the message that the night was over did it miraculously appear.

Not a night hunter. Night hunter is human controlled. And no, the volatiles are supposed to spawn there. So hundreds others, including me, have been killed by the same volatiles in the same cave.

You clearly misunderstood something. Thats exactly what was supposed to happen. The cave is where volatiles hide during the day; thats why you have to do the quest during the night. During the day the cave is full of volatiles. If you're in the cave when day starts, then theyll be in the cave too.

Yes, my mistake was to not keep check on the time.
before you get out of water, use suvivor instinct to locate the volatiles above, kill them quickly and you'll be safe. there were less than ten zombies in that cave, they won't give you much trouble.
