Obviously, it would simulate a 3D environment in which you play Papers, Please on a desktop computer :decomonkey:

Actually, it MIGHT work! Anouther 2D game called 'Please Don't Touch Anything' has a VR mode being made where they transformed the 2D game into a 3D environment for the VR mode, so maybe it will work IF somehow someone decides to start working on this game again.

The developer, Lucas Pope, has actually tweeted about the possibility of making a VR version of Papers, Please, saying that he's thought about it but it probably won't happen for a while (he's currently working on a new game called Return of the Obra Dinn right now): https://twitter.com/dukope/status/648884995390484480

I think the main impediments is the fact that Lucas would basically need to rewrite the entire game in a brand new engine; making a 2D game using OpenFL is one thing, but a 3D game using Unreal/Unity is a completely different matter. There's also the risk of losing a lot of the original's pixellated art-style and retro feel during the conversion to 3D. Finally, there's also the question of whether a game where you mostly shuffle papers around a desk is too "boring" for VR, when the technology should be used to provide unique experiences which take advantage of its biggest strengths. Then again, if VR takes off in a big way over the next few years, perhaps a VR version might become more likely...

That said, if you're interested in an indie VR game that's similar to Papers, Please, you might be interested in this game that's coming out next month, in which you play as a happy purple monster who works at a fruit stall: http://store.steampowered.com/app/447330/

I totally agree!! I'd love to see a new Papers Please in VR! It would be a perfect fit for seated / standing VR experience. And I think a lot of the 2D feel could totally be kept in making it in VR as a 3D experience. The booth would be what is really built in 3D and all of the people could still be a 2D billboard Sprite set at a depth outside your booths window.

Things like the stamps could be simply stamp objects that you pick up and actually stamp with. So some things like the stamps, would become 3D objects, the passports, rule book, etc could all be 2D-ish objects that you could support dragging gestures to flip pages, use the normal trigger to grip and pickup those objects. The potential is so good!

I would litterally die if this a VR version of this game came out. Simulated terrorist attacks, having to take out your sniper rifle and gun down freedom fighters. Peeking out your window before you start your shift; staring at all the cold despondent immigrants. Each of them knowing that their fate is in your hands. Grinning privately at the picture your son drew for you.. Looking in your desk drawer at the family photo that keeps you alive and sane in the hellish place you live in.

Going home.... deciding how to spend the measly governmental wages you are paid. Looking at your son and having to decide if food is really more important than the medicine that he needs....

It would be otherworldly.

If the mobile assets were used then things could actually be curved in a desk shape! Awesome!
Would we just have to pinch our fingers to grab something?

I think you would have to redo the game to make it a 3D space. The hardest thing would be all the people.

So, we're going to be in Cobrastan next? :o

That could actually be a really good idea. Even though this game isn't 3D, it could be easily transformed.

I also would really love to get papers please VR game. They already have Please Don't Touch Anything for VR so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.
