Character doesn't continue?
Its hard for me to think of putting in all these hours when it means nothing next season.
That's correct, but not all of it.
Leagues include the new mechanics/features first, for the length of the league. During that time, the featured mechanic is emphasized and given greater rewards and ease of access, all with everyone starting on a fresh slate.
After the league ends, your characters and stash tabs are moved over to the standard league where you can continue playing that character if you like, aswell as the mechanic being introduced to the standard league, albeit "dumbed down" (not so much a focus).
League gets first intro to the newest stuff, basically.
Let's say I make a Ritual League character, play it for 4 months (how long a league typically lasts for) and then the new league comes out. That Ritual League character then becomes a standard league character and you'd have to make a new one for ultimatum. Fresh economy, everyone starts clean slate and races reset, new builds, new changes, etc.
It's always about making new builds (or the same ones) going through the campaign faster and getting to endgame maps. Perhaps said person wants to unlock he free cosmetic rewards in that league or just want to try new builds.
Standard is there for that reason for people who want to run tests on builds or to just continue playing on that character, but they cannot participate in the current league due to being standard.
