Path of exile is too big
My path of exile should take around 20gb of space. Every MINIOR UPDATE have around 5GB what the ♥♥♥♥ is that. Moreover, i had 20gb free space when i started download it i saw that i have around 500MB free. WHAT THE HELL?!

1. games reserve extra space when they do a download to ensure there is actually enough room for them
2. you're disk shouldn't be that full it can severely slow down the entire PC
3. remove some other games that you don't play or buy a larger storage device

Its steams patching mechanism.
Grumpy Feb 19, 2019 @ 1:19pm
keep in mind that you need 2x the game size as free space, due to steams update mechanic.

The others games from steam updates normally i mean when the update is 800MB is 800Mb only Path of Exile have that problem that minor updates are around 5 GB

minor updates in PoE are minor, too.

the difference is that steam recreates all files which are involved in the update and that is in all cases the 20GB content file. either empty your disk like advised above or use the standalone client.

that still sounds like something they don't NEED to be doing like we will make your computer do twice the work to update on steam like that sounds like a real solid plan :steammocking:

What minor update though? This patch e.g. replaced many textures and introduced the new supporter packs (see changelog), so of course it's going to have quite a bit of download size.

And as always, if either download size or temporary disk space requirements are a burden to you, consider migrating to the standalone client.

I did some research and i saw that in my steam folder in "steamapps" there is folder "common" where are the games but also there is a folder "downloading" and during PoE updates it increase size to the game size and then it erase it. Its Totaly weird but i think it can be somekind repaired cuz other games dont have that problems

you cant really repair this "problem" and its not weird if you would have read my previous post:

the only way Valve or GGG could "repair this problem", is by
#1 changing the steam update procedure which works fine for most games, so that it will be not ultra safe anymore
#2 or you change the file architecture of the PoE Content file which works flawlessly with the standalone client and is used for performance reasons.

like stated multiple times now, the only solution for you personally is to get more space or use the standalone client.

So you're gonna need 20ish GB or even more of free space during the update, as steam refuses to update your existing files. This works similarly for other games, although it doesn't bother people as often if it's just say 300 MB temporary space for a 10 MB update, if the affected files are smaller. (PoE uses a single file for the games assets to reduce overhead during runtime etc)

I analyzed the patching a while back:

Other games use much more temporary space as well:

I don't think valve considers this "broken" though:

This is true. Steam uses the space to create a temporary backup copy of each file that is being patched. We do this because we have no idea if your internet or wifi will cut out during the download, or if your PC will shut down, or if Steam will crash for some reason. If any of those things happen and the patch is only halfway done, and we didn't have the backup files, then the game would be in a totally broken state and wouldn't be playable until you got online again and Steam could do a full re-download of the broken files.

Back when games were 5-10 GB this was totally uncontroversial. Now that many games are in the 20-50 GB range, it's kind of annoying. We could add a prompt like "If your computer or internet access shut down for any reason during the patch process, you may have to redownload the game" and make you click the "I'm a Cowboy" button. But I think you can understand that even if we do that, it will generate a lot of angry people saying "I went on vacation and took my laptop and I don't have internet access and MY GAME DOESNT WORK" and asking for refunds.
(Note that the valve employee calls it a backup, even though there isn't even a second identical copy on disk... so it's not a backup in the regular sense and more in a laymen term sense)

Okey i got another question so if a download a standard client of PoE it gonna download in this same way that steam does? and do i have to install it again or i can paste somewhere files to do that? Last one, if i gonna use standalone client could i play it by steam to grant achievs etc.?
Grumpy Feb 20, 2019 @ 3:20am
#1 you can transfer your content file from steam to the standalone client to save the download of it.

#2 the standalone client dont re-creates the whole file, it only updates the files which are needed

#3 do you get the achievements in steam? no only ingame

#4 keep in mind that, if you wanna switch you need to login on the website with your steam account, and add an email and password to your account so that you can use the standalone client.
