I assume you're playing a Life based Bane Occultist. Maybe with Dodge. I've also played that recently and that version of the build has essentially no defense. You are a glass cannon that can only become tanky through very good ES gear + CI and the Occultist's ES node. It should be able to perform well enough for you to grind currency to get such gear. I think damage was good enough to go all the way into red maps. I just personally decided I hated ES casters.
1. rouge deadeye, learned the game, hit a wall at t4 maps, char lvl 80, not enough defence.
2. earthquake-barbarian (whatever its called in poe ^^), got him to lvl 83, t8 maps, brick wall, not enough damage xD.
3. dual wand Arc-Elementalist (so much fun), got her to lvl 91, t14 maps (is this finaly the endgame?), but again, to squishy (8,5k hp + energyshield, but not much else for def). i redesigned her for the next league with a shield in off-hand, hope i can get her to meet this sirus(sinus? sidus?)-guy everyone is talking about xD
imo this is just right. it would be a bit disappointing, if a new player could finish all content with his first char on the first try. this way i discover so many new things with each playthrough.
now i started my first ssfhc-char .D an looking forward to the gauntlet.
tldr: difficulty is just right, would be dissapointed if it was easier. seems i started playin poe at just the right time ^^
probably poorly rolled maps is your issue
The BEEEGEST problem here is that people are still wanting to Speed-Run maps and bosses. I died all 200+ times because I did not understand boss mechanics at that time, Al-Hezmin, The Hunter for example has 2 phases that are easy to manoeuvre but if you don't know then dying is even easier.
Too many players not giving the game half a chance go on to review it and say its garbage. I have just over 1100 hours (rookie numbers) and only now do I kinda maybe not follow a guide so much and experiment which half the time ends up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but that is the fun in the game. To try stupid things, if its stupid but it works then well...
The problem is that everybody thinks THEY ought to be the ones that the difficulty is measured by, no matter how good or bad they are at the game, how much experience they have and how much thought they did or did not invest into their character.
If your character has maxed resists and the mob had three curses and still one-shot you, you either rolled a hard-counter to your build into the map mod, had some really weird defense setup (energy shield without shav or chaos inoculation or something similar) or had like 2k hp.
My berserker cyclone character has zero curses, runs the notable that makes blocks not remove 100 % of the damage, has under 5k hp and little in the way of chaos resist and runs yellows just fine.
No amazing investment either, garbage uniques and rares across the board, highest investment was a watcher's eye with one applicable modifier (pride effect).
Only time I ever die is when the mobs pile on, I get pinned and get hit by a dozen hits or so at once.
Game isn't garbage, your build is just seriously flawed in some aspect.
Not everyone likes to play strong Meta-builds
I have seen Builds fail in former seasons just because new player couldn´t get the Gear required to get this jump from "average" (dies occasionally) to "great" (can do T8+)
And in HC this is a real problem, especially if your build became more trashy after 3.15
I think you´re quite on spot, BUT.. this example is a joke tbh
It´s very simple...
1. game less fun = less teammates for Coop
2. less teammates = you lose interest and play other games with friends
3. ..all that leads to players dropping out in huge numbers
-> Seasons require a motivated playerbase (GGG failed hard this season.. eg: FLASKS
