Left-click for move only, why?
I've been an avid ARPG player for 20+ years. I've only recently taking a greater liking to PoE and looking through the forums I have noticed that a lot of players like switching left-click to Move Only. I tried it out, and it just feels very strange to me to not have some sort of spell or attack there instead. In all of my years of playing these sorts of games I have never once thought "I'd like one less ability on my mouse even though this same button will still make me move regardless".

I've seen the arguments for it. "You might die from mis-clicking on a monster when trying to run away and attack when you don't want to!" I still don't understand what the rage is though as I've never experienced this. I much prefer having my main attack on the left button and whatever teleport/escape skill on right click, and spacebar set to attack-in-place when I need to.

Maybe I'm weird. 🤷‍♂️

You can set some skills on there so that at least that feeling of wasting the slot goes away.

Golems for example will be cast only when using the attack-in-place key, otherwise it's move.
Want some guard skill triggered (basically) as soon as they're ready? Put them on LMB.

I get that. I never have the feeling of wasting it though as it's always set as whatever my main attack skill is.
To each their own.

Only reason is what you stated, I used to use an attack skill on left until I played a ranged character. It was then I noticed the negative side of trying to dodge and there being a sneaky barrel or random shootable object my curser moved over causing a death xD

i think its mostly HC players that do that and maybe some people copying them

use guard skills / instant skills in general will then activate whenever you click if you move all the time you naturally also keep activating the skill

Just preference one way or the other. Some people like making sure they move when they click, other's it doesn't bother so much, and find the extra slot useful for some other skill. I don't see what the fuss is about.
Just like you stated in your post; players use this setting because they want to move around freely without attacking or targeting mobs mostly for survival reasons. I've been using this setup for years and it has ingrained into my muscle memory. In the end it comes down to personal preference, nothing wrong with any setup as long as it works for the user.

I used to feel the same way you do but I realized that too often I was not able to move out of the way without an often deadly delay. It didn't take too long playing with move there before I stopped missing having a power there.

I just set up the last hotkey to move only and bound it to "e" I don't like moving with the LMB either.
