Yes valve, please fix that.

This is true. Steam uses the space to create a temporary backup copy of each file that is being patched. We do this because we have no idea if your internet or wifi will cut out during the download, or if your PC will shut down, or if Steam will crash for some reason. If any of those things happen and the patch is only halfway done, and we didn't have the backup files, then the game would be in a totally broken state and wouldn't be playable until you got online again and Steam could do a full re-download of the broken files.

Back when games were 5-10 GB this was totally uncontroversial. Now that many games are in the 20-50 GB range, it's kind of annoying. We could add a prompt like "If your computer or internet access shut down for any reason during the patch process, you may have to redownload the game" and make you click the "I'm a Cowboy" button. But I think you can understand that even if we do that, it will generate a lot of angry people saying "I went on vacation and took my laptop and I don't have internet access and MY GAME DOESNT WORK" and asking for refunds.

i dont know how to see the disk allocate but it feels like its way longer and bigger than it should be -.- i shouldnt have to wait 20+ minutes for a 200mb patch to complete fully in its Disk stage...

If this bothers you too much right now, before valve gets their service together, download the standalone and use that instead. Contact GGGs support via email in order to associate an email to your account, so that you can log in with the standalone and don't loose progress.

no, but SSDs are faster. and in PoE's case everytime the content file will be copied. which is around 8GB big

Implied by Darksidewalker within an atypical retort...

Using a SSD will be faster; but will not give you a static timespan of 10 seconds as it does not replace steam's patching method.

Of course this could be changed thereby alleviating the mangulation into two or more containers. No one said thou shalt only use one resouce file and there is a really good reason you should avoid The Blob, Winnebago or also known as The God Class.

This really blows! Now I remember I used to remove the game from my library because every 3 days I would get an update.
Steams "pre-allocation" system is crap and wonky as hell. Most of the time on my system it just crawls and takes 100x longer than the actual download and patching combined. Its a joke. If I could disable it completely I would. If a game wont work till I am back online, i dont care as I will play something else that is working. But "pre-allocating" trying to kill HDD is not cool.

Wat...? "Back when..."....is still pretty much today....
