Purchasing leveling gear for both of you would make for a fast leveling experince if you do choose to reroll together. A lot of fun if you both know what to do
- Buy a http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Southbound on poe.trade
- Equip it
- Make sure you don't crit and don't use damage over time effects
- Party up and you take the lead, run 3 screens ahead of your friend, nearly killing everything
- Let your friend get the final hit while you are way ahead (3+ screens) so you don't get xp share
You could alternatively also level an alternative character.
goldrim, wanderlust, Le Heup rings, tabula rasa = your no worries uniques that will carry you to cruel without needing to upgrade
Pick your skill, the weapon type it uses and research the best fit. If you have no currency for sc, tough it out like everyone else
Lmao unplug computer
Check that guy in the library or look them up on the wiki.

That way he can power through the mobs and you just gank the bosses for him.
Because of the 'mana reserved %' mechanic, i'd probably pick these, since he has to do the killing for xp, unlike a 'lab carry' run:
Clarity (mana regen), no reserve requirement.
Discipline (energy shield), 35% reserve requirement.
Hatred (%cold damage added) or Anger (flat fire damage added), both are 50% r.req.
Leaves you with 15% of your normal mana pool, should be plenty to speed up for your friend.
And if you really want to top it off, also roll with a rejuvenation totem gem.
For curses, dunno. But it will give you something to cast without stealing kills and the xp.
Did you try to use some low level Weapon Gear? That way you should be able to attack those mobs too but don`t kill those with one hit and your friend should be able to strick the final blow and earn those much needed XP.
