Putting IGN itself aside, scoring systems are a poor way to review games to begin with. It's a meaningless and arbitrary system. Outlets that use it don't even respect or value their own scores. For example a lot of these outlets have their own end of the year awards picked by staff members which is fine. But lets say they reviewed an RPG game and scored it 9 out of 10 and that was the highest scoring RPG game of the year. You would think this would default it to winning their own GOTY award but that often isn't the case.

The only reason why reviewers do it at all (and many secretly hate it behind the scenes) is because they know most people don't read the actual review and instead rush to the scores. Sites like metacritic are even worse just aggregates review scores and even reduces traffic to the actual reviews.

Your best bet when dealing with reviews is to actually ignore any scores and find and read/watch the review and see if those details sound enticing to you or not. Going by scores alone will only lead to often disappointment or even missing out on lower scored games that you would have actually adored.

Watched the review and I've read a few others.

Seems on point.

The biggest negatives seem to be if you dislike:
The lack of character choice.
The storytelling/conversations outside of missions / The bad story of your character.

Getting past that you are likely to enjoy the game.

honestly i trust IGN much more than the average "gamer" now since "gamer"s love to cry about stuff that doesn't actually matter, and reviewers actually try to review a GAME. This is the first time i've seen critics so positive on a musou game and it's so cool to see though!

I miss this kind of joy and whimsy at a game being reviewed positively. More people should just play the games they enjoy and be happy when games do well (unless it's under something super scummy)

KT went all in and let the fujos live out their fantasy of having BL romance with the characters. I find it funny that as soon as they add same sex romance into DW all the western media outlets are reviewing it highly. Peculiar.

If anything, high score from IGN makes it more suspicious for me.
They're either selling out or supporting certain politics overa an actual gameplay. No matter how they judge from now on, their reputation is bad enough that you don't want to associate with them. Like, at all, whatever score they give is always a bad advertisement.

Metacritic user score also won't count any longer.
On Sept 16th 2024, MC removed 1600 high score reviews for Rise of the Ronin to "adjust" the user score down from near 9.1 to 7.9, only to make 76 media score not look so stupid that media actually cannot play action games.
