Anyway to turn off my characters voice?
I get it I get it his heavy breathing adds to the creepiness but honestly it is just annoying for me! I want to focus on hearing things and I can barely hear myself think over the sound of his breathing!

I agree with you, but also I feel like the game would actually be freakier if he didn't breathe like that because you always know when someone is coming based on how heavily he is breathing.

I always thought the breathing was a nice additive.
It kinda gave me an idea of who Miles was although I didnt see or hear him...
The way the conveyed his personality in my eyes was cool...

I can see where you are coming from, however I think you are left with completely removing all sound...
You can check the game files though, if you come across any "charactercontroller" file, just scroll until you see "defaultproperties" and "sounds" and just take off anything there and put none...

That could either work or break the game (its tricky to fool around with files if the game is already compiled, usually you will need to recompile if you change game files)...

Hope this help, message me if you have questions...

i liked the breathing. it made me scared for him. this just makes me realise how hard it is for devs to hit a target audience....

The breathing makes it more realistic for me. It always had me immersed in the game. But thats just me doe :D

yep i couldnt make it more than 15 mins in the game because of his heavy breathing. It destroyed the entire game i mean hearing any sound long enough makes it annoying. I mean how hard would it have been to add a toggle option?

HEY! don't go mucking with the breathing...I use it to prank my friends :) I'll admit, there are times I'm thinking "come on guy, the varianst that WERE here are now gone, chill out" But what better thing to make telemarketers listen to when they call?

Resurrecting the thread. I'm about 5 minutes from putting this game down forever and downvoting it into oblivion unless I can find a way to turn this ♥♥♥♥ off.

It's annoying. Period. If you didn't find it annoying then happy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ day for you. Personally, I can't stand it, and I play horror games almost exclusively these days. I've played every Silent Hill, loves me some Dead Space, can't get enough S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I loved Amnesia up until the (godawful) ending, just had 20+ hours of fun in Alien: Isolation.

So, I thought I'd get around to finally playing Outlast and whammo--I'm slapped in the face with a character with such a bad case of the jitters, that every locker in which he hides gets magically transformed into a jack shack.

Either the breathing goes or I'm tossing this game with only an hour played. I can't take it anymore. I don't need 8 audio channels full of some guy jacking it.

Finally found it buried in a reddit thread, posting here to let people know.

To DISABLE your character's breathing in Outlast:

Go to Steam\SteamApps\common\Outlast\OLGame\CookedPCConsole and open SoundBanksInfo.xml, and make a copy of that file. Then, in the original file, find and delete the following lines:

<Event Id="68090531" Name="VO_MILES_STRESS_BREATH" />
<Event Id="3495032430" Name="VO_MILES_STRESS_BREATH_HIGH" />
<Event Id="715829624" Name="VO_MILES_STRESS_BREATH_LOW" />
<Event Id="212751112" Name="VO_MILES_STRESS_BREATH_MID" />
<Event Id="891231566" Name="VO_MILES_STRESS_BREATH_STOP" />

Did this and it does not work. I have tried and tied to get past the breathing sounds but i just cannot, i have put in for a refund. Sorry game devs but if you update this game where you can turn it off i will re buy this game. Until then sorry. I won't touch this game anymore.

Ok emailed the devs and they said to delete this file WwiseDefaultBank_VO_Miles.bnk"
in the Steam\SteamApps\common\Outlast\OLGame\CookedPCConsole folder. It works. THANK YOU DEVS.

Yeah that's what I did too, found it as a single post on some obscure forum. Much better. With the ini method he still sometimes breathed in my ears. The whole Miles breathing felt like I was carrying him piggybacked the entire time with him heavy breathing over my shoulder.

Yeah man i know what you mean. I hate all heavy breating in games. Some times you can get around it by turning on some music, but some times you cannot.
CosmicD Oct 6, 2016 @ 3:31am
thanks. I 've got this tick that doesn't feel pleasent if I have to think about my breathing all the time, also have it with hearing somebody have hickups , it races my mind. So that's why it's very conforting to know that I don't constantly have to hear that.

thats the point of it, it isnt supposed to be easy to think. If you were in the actual situations of this gamne would you really be able to think clearly?
