Would you recommend?
Would u recommend me to get this game?

I cant play Poker but I love roguelite games and I also liked most of the biggest card games on Steam (Slay the spire, Monster Train, Ring of pain, Cobalt core, Shogun Showdown, Loope hero, Marvel Midnight suns).

Thanks

You only need to know what a poker hand is (which, oddly, enough is not unique to poker), and the game has a list of all the poker hands (like no more than a dozen).

There is a Poker theme, and some terms used in Poker are co-opted here, but the rules of Balatro have practically nothing to do with Poker at all.

It's more of a math game than a poker game.

But you don't need to do any serious math. You just need to worry about getting the most optimal combination of chips/mult/xMult and that is fairly straightforward.

As a fan of most of the other games you listed, I also like this one so I'd recommend.

Being able to understand the strategy of drawing to poker hands is fairly important, though you don't have to do your own card counting, the game will do that for you.

Being able to understand the strategy of betting, bluffing, and folding is not part of Balatro, so don't worry about that.

Balatro is significantly similar to the other games you mention, but it's also significantly different. One of the differences is that it doesn't have an RPG combat (or space shooter) layer under the card play: you play cards to earn points towards a threshold, no further complexity as a rule (the complexity is in how you make the cards translate to enough points). Another is that radically modifying your deck as such is less central. You still may do it - I ended my last run with something like 20 aces, most of them enhanced - but it's not the central focus the way it is in most of the games you mentioned.

I think you're a prime candidate to like the game. This game is for you.

From the outside it could look like a poker game. The theme is poker, but the game play is far from poker. You never bet anything (fake money nor real money), you are not trying to beat others' hands, you're not even playing with a regular deck of playing cards for very long.

I'd say Balatro is to poker what Slay the Spire is to a dungeon crawler ARPG games, or what Shogun Showdown is to a pure tactical battler like Xcom. You could dislike ARPG's and Xcom, still like StS and SS, because they are very different games.

I got this game without knowing a single thing about poker, and it's still fun to play. The game has a list of all the poker hands you can check at any time, as well as the name of each type of card and how many you have, so you don't need to learn anything beforehand to play.

As someone else said, the game is more about which cards you can combine to get the most amount of chips, so it's mostly math in the end, and if you make it very far, you forget it's poker in the first place because of how ridiculous (in a good way) it can get.

So yeah give it a shot! You will most likely love this (also, go ahead and personalize your cards; my favorites are the slay the spire ones!) :sts_ironclad:

A run won't take you longer than an hour, even if you get lucky and win your first run.

If you don't like it, get your money back.

I never played poker before this game either. At first I thought it would be boring and hard to learn but the game does show to how to do the hands which I still forget and reference on the side. Once you get more jokers (which are like power ups ) it has a similar feel to vampire survivors where you just keep moving. For its price I think it’s really worth it when you are tired had a long day and just want to play something without a dialog or story that you can just play and zone out too. I find games like this relaxing and help relieve stress. For the price I’d definitely recommend it.

yes. aside from the base scoring mechanics, this game is nothing like poker. if you like rouge-likes, you'll like it.

If you knew nothing about Poker, this game might fuel some interest in playing cards. But the social, competitive aspects of Poker are ignored in Balatro. It's a lean Rogue-like more than anything else. The name "Balatro" is Latin for Joker, and that's definitely what drives the game.

In uni, I played a lot of Poker. Some of it was serious, and it taught me that you really have to study and work hard to become a professional-level player. Other games I played were ones we invented, like "All Red Cards Are Wild", and that's like Balatro. Just don't draw a Royal Flush in Spades.

Go for it! :odd_todd: No poker skills needed.

I don’t really understand why people say it has nothing to do with poker. Sure it’s not like traditional poker, but It’s basically the same thing as video poker with card counting and everything. The game does the card counting for you but it’s still there.

It just has different rules and crazy modifiers added in from the scoring system and jokers. And the ability to add and remove cards from your deck and put modifiers on them as well. But you still start with a normal deck of 52 and you’re still playing regular poker hands. You discard cards you don’t need and draw more trying to get a good hand. That’s all still there.
