See that sword thing the protagonist is carrying around with her? That's called the Transistor.

Ah I see. Why is the sword called that?

Going too much into lore and theory would be spoilers. Since you don't own the game, I wouldn't suggest trying to find out too much about it.

Becasue its thematic, same reason the Process is called the Process.

I don't believe there's some major reason it's called that aside from it sounding techy and mysterious. I suppose it might've been called a number of other names and still achieved the same effect. Maybe there's some very subtle reason for "Transistor" in particular that I'm not seeing, however.

A transistor is more or less a switch that controls electric current I think?

I am sure there are tons of convincing reasons why this particular name fits the Process-controlling device. Maybe read up on transistors on wikipedia!

The reason for the sword being called the Transistor is actually a pretty good point for discussion, I think, I've been wondering it myself. Let's not kid ourselves - the terminology throughout the game is well thought-out and appropriate so I'm going to rule out the possibility that it's been picked 'just because'. The Transistor is perhaps the most central motif to the game - so I think there actually is some subtle meaning to its use.

Perhaps worthy of note is the triangle symbol that both Red and Mr. Nobody wear on their clothes, which is the circuit diagram notation for a transistor.

My guess is that the Transistor, on a metaphorical level, works as an actual transistor with regard to the Process - its user being the second input, which modulates and shapes the much more powerful current that runs through it.
