Sorry to necro this, but its an appropriate spot to ask. What if Im still early in the game and dont have a colony or power plant? I just built my first vehicle, but i put a turret on it and it eats through the stored energy like a fat boy at mcdonalds.
I havent even gone into the forest yet (was following the quest chain for making a vehicle), is there anyway for me to recharge it?
You find Ataro pretty soon after your current quests, and get the scripts from him. You can also go back into the editor and remove the turret... build another one without it... add more energy cells for it to last longer. I believe you can have up to 8. You eventually will know exactly what you want in both scout and battle craft and build for those purposes. I use a modified motorcycle design from the workshop for my early scouting, and I have a scout aircraft modified from the template (which is not very good without balancing). The upshot is you will want to modify most things that you get from other sources, but that kind of makes it your own.
Never thought of the workshop. Can you recommend a good early game ATV for running around in with my two followers? Id love to use the default one in game, but it needs aluminum that I dont have, and my designs come out so ugly :P
[Edit] I do this even with things downloaded from the workshop. Jet exhaust is also useful for steep inclines (near vertical) but I think is not available until much later. You can update your design as you acquire new scripts, and save different versions based on where you are in the game. The Aluminum mine is not far down the road from finding Ataro.
Basically if you like a body model in the workshop, download it and re-do all of the equipment and materials to fit your needs. You can double up (overlap) tires to make them wider for better traction, or simply do tandem tires. This works especially well with motorcycle designs. I always double the tires on motorcycles for better stability and traction ("fat tires").
