King's Field
Anyone remember the old King's Field games? Some say it's the spiritual predecessor to Demon Souls and Dark Souls.

From Software worked on both titles. Dark Souls actually has some characters/lore? from the King's Field games I'm, pretty sure.

Yea I played a couple of those games... well tried to play as I remember I died within minutes not getting very far :P. The Souls series definitely share some design/mechanics with Kings Field, there were also some King's Field references in Demon's Souls (some of the same weapons, some character mentioned is in both series).

However the King's Field games have aged really poorly, early PS1 era 3D graphics, ugh :P

Yes, I have played the first King's Field last year and it was a great experience. But IMO Dark Souls was way more inspired on Severance: Blade of Darkness than on King's Field titles. The art style, music, atmosphere and combat are very similar to that amazing 2001 spanish game.

@Rei dos Vermes, yea Severance: Blade of Darkness was a great game, pretty similar in atmosphere and combat to Dark Souls (sans the RPG elements). 90's were good times for medieval action adventures, I also liked Die by The Sword, Drakan and Crusaders of Might & Magic.

Redguard was another decent one, though it looked horrible. Battlespire is one of my favorites. :D Both are Elder Scrolls adventures.

FROM *themselves* said this; Demon's Souls was a spiritual successor to King's Field, and Dark Souls was a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls.
You'll be surprised about the number of similarities between the DS2 and Ancient City/Shadow Tower Abyss aesthetics-wise. There's even a Refinery 2.0, Violent Poison Area 2.0 and King's Mausoleum 2.0 there.

Anyone remember KuriKuri Mix? That was one of the best From Software titles! :D

Funny you should mention Ancient City, as I picked it up about a year ago and have dabbled in it from time to time. You can definitely feel the influence.
