I've seen both sides of the criticism when it comes to the difficulty of this game. I've seen people who say the difficulty renders the game to nothing but trash and I've seen people who say the other side should just suck it up and "get good". While I see the merits of both sides I also disagree with them. The "get good" people I'll call the "Veterans" and the "it's too hard" as the "Enlists" for simplicity sake. I can side with the Veterans when it comes to the fact War Thunder can still be enjoyable despite the sudden difficulty. But I disagree with them on the difficulty should be ignored. I can agree with the Enlists saying that the difficulty should be brought down a few pegs. But I disagree with them that the game is a hot pile of trash because of the difficulty. See, balance in a game, especially in a vehicular MMO like War Thunder, is important. If a game is criminally difficult it can lose possible new comers and old players will become disillusioned with it. Planes will be shot down at impossible angles, killing blows can be shot that you could never see coming, and physics bend in a very inconsistent way. I've been killed in this game in ways I thought was incredibly unfair and I blamed the game for it. But then I thought maybe it was my fault, that if I'd been more experienced I could have survived. So I play more and become more experienced but then this unfair game play strikes again and again and again. It becomes frustrating over time and it really just makes you not want to play the game. It would be different if you knew what mistake you made but it often seems like you die due to no fault of your own, which just makes the game all the more unfair. I recall a time when I first played War Thunder, it was about three years ago and I loved the graphics and the design of the early WW2 vehicles. The planes were swift and the tanks were powerful. Sure, I'd die every once in a while to a stray rocket or a mis-targeted ring of artillery and lose all my vehicle but what do you expect? I was a noob. Years later, I could see the boons of my experience, faster planes and bigger tanks. I could now flip around and instantly kill a pilot or pierce the armor of a tank in one shot. I had a stockpile of silver lions and a humble trove of golden eagles and research points could be found at every turn. But then, about a few months ago, it got harder and harder for seemingly no reason. My shots would bounce off plane cockpit glass and my shells would become inert even when hitting light armor of a tank. I would be outmaneuvered by attacker planes and successfully hit in the same spot I'd try to strike an enemy tank. My gunners became trash and my tank would explode leagues from the battlefield where no tank should have been able to hit me. I even tried Realistic Battles, hoping for a change of pace but they were unplayable. I even tried calling up a friend of mine who was a War Thunder Veteran and the difficulty spike was obvious to even him. To make matters worse, my silver lion stockpile was draining and research points were a rare commodity at best. The worst part was that I knew people were doing better than me for seemingly no reason. I swore I wasn't a bad player but my lackluster performance seemed to speak for itself, I just couldn't explain it. It's not even like i'm a noob at this game, like I said, I've played this game for years. I might not play it every day, but I at least play it fairly consistently. I also maintain a pretty typical score of 1000 points per match. Sure, it might not be a whole lot to brag about but it's also nothing to spit at. This game's problem seems obvious to me: This game doesn't reward players anymore, not even long-time players like me. But I feel like the biggest issue is, I love this game. WW2 is a horrible event in history, recent history at that. But the philosophy, the different governments coming together, the strategies, the shiny planes, the bulky tanks, and the enormous warships. I just can't help but become enthralled by it all. I think War Thunder is realistic, it is the most accurate depiction of the combat of the time that I've ever witnessed first-hand in a video game. And I applaud War Thunder's dedication to realism. But I think they've gone too far with all of this. Sometimes it's best to leave some realistic aspects out of video games. It's difficult for me to appreciate and enjoy War Thunder now and I don't want to see the game I love so much wither away. So please, Gaijin Entertainment, make War Thunder enjoyable again.
