would like to know if anything can be done about lag.
About 20% of the time I have to reset game. More noticeable in plane than tank. I have older system but well above min. I don't see others complaining about lag. I have i5, 8gb ram, Storage is either ssd or hdd and I find them running the same. Suggested graph is min but I have ran them up to medium with same results. Ty for your time in advance.

Nothing you describe checking would do anything about (internet) lag.
The steps you take would address frame rate issues.

What are you actually trying to resolve?

my pc knowledge is okay but average at best among steam users. I don't know any steps to resolve frame rate issues for instance.

So are you trying to fix lag issues, or frame rate or stutter issues?

on it. Intel says there can be mods to fix issue. There are no software or hardware updates. Could you recommend a mod? should i use them?

This clears up nothing, and only adds more questions.

Intel says there are mods to fix what? I doubt Intel has any stance or information on modding War Thunder

Do you run something like GeForce experience or other software in the backround? I don't know if the Steam Overlay could be factor, but try to disable that for WT if it's activated.

You could try to lower shadows, clouds and water effects to the absolute minimum as those usually require the most ressources. The setting for older GBU may be the best solution

Okay, this is going to take some time to get up to speed. About the mod. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/resources/how-to-fix-your-low-frame-rate.html (there is a section search for tweaks and mods). There are youtuber's claim they can fix your fps with a mod (a file you put in WT directory). I will research and ask if it would be applicable if necessary. Using the Windows game performance tool I see the FPS is 20 and should be 60. I will do some research get back if necessary. FPS is the right place to look. TY

Your postings are pretty confusing. First of all, forget about YouTube and the link from Intel. Also forget about any mods or any other nonsense.
You only have 8GB of RAM. You should double that. The recommended amount of RAM for War Thunder is 16GB, for games in general it should be 32GB these days.
Next, make sure you don't have any applications running in the background, such as Discord or similar. Especially with so little RAM, this affects performance.

Then check, if your drivers are up to date.

And then run a tracert to warthunder.com to make sure that the whole path to the servers is working properly. Your ISP only measures internet speed to their next node, not the whole path to the War Thunder servers.

can't upgrade this laptop at all. it is still way above the minimum though.

Pretty unusual to not be able to upgrade RAM on a Laptop.

There are single modules up to 32 GB.

But anyway, I don´t know what kind of laptop you´ve got.
This game is 12 years old and under constant development. I don´t think that it runs as well as it did in 2012 with these requirements.

Try the other things I´ve mentioned and see if it helps.

I'm guessing it's the RAM. RAM allocation is very important. Its sounds like a hardware issue rather than a connection issue. If you were having a connection issue you'd see bottom left hand of the screen of a high % of PL (Package loss) or a high ping. In your case I'd find out if you can rip open your laptop and see if your ram is accessible. I do know that there are RAM sticks made for laptops because I used to own a prebuilt ITX desktop that used laptop sized RAM and I upgraded from 8GB to 16. Or simply save enough $ for another machine.

RAM can be a problem, 16gb is enough to run games though (you only need more for rendering, heavy processing or CNC applications), but 8gb is enough to run War Thunder without problems.

You said it's a laptop, does it have a separat GPU or is it integrated with the CPU?

as far as i know integrated and can't be upgraded. i will probably build a system with in the next few years go back to a tower.

So far this is what I have tried. Clean fan, put on ssd internal, clear cash/ history, and use windows gaming tool to measure FPS. I just played a match that didn't lag and the FPS stayed between 20-26 FPS the entire time. I think when I notice it was dropping below 20. I can just keep trying various FPS countermeasures, be okay with this as long as doesn't continue to lag out, expect better or any better suggestions?
