Confused about my new bomber ... That has no bombs?
Lol, Aye so I just got my new Russian heavy bomber, Just a T2 or 3 I think, (Cant honestly say seeing the game's offline at the moment) But, I am so confused .. I need to earn experience to upgrade my plane to "Drop bombs" ... but ... I.. I.. I'm flying a bomber! .. what gives ... I certainly don't want to take this thing into lower altitude to just die constaantly trying to dogfight on the change I could earn some xp ... Any advice on this anyone would be appreciated! ... Thanks!

Don't put your battles too much into dogfighting. Instead go for the vehicles and AA, they give a good amount of exp and you'll get those bombers in no time :)
I don't remember having to "earn" bombs on a bomber plane? Oo
Sounds weird.
Some of the light bombers start without bombs, but the upside for that is, they are low rank and have forward guns. just go for ground targets as suggested. you actually do earn XP for flying around as well. avoid the dogfights for now. the later heavy bombers always start with a payload. Honestly though, in the low ranks you hardly need bombs as most all ground targets are armored cars and AAA which can be more easily killed with machine guns.
Most of the low tier bombers start out with utterly useless 50kg bombs, anyway.

Mighty Jingles made a video about how to 'grind' bombers. Basically, do historical battles. Go on low altitude (not-quite) suicide runs, low enough that you can't miss. If you survive, head back to base and rearm.

Worked fairly well for me. Although I find it works in arcade battles as well, provided you've got a rear gunner. Once you get the first bomb upgrade, you generally have something heavy enough to start taking out pillboxes, which earn you a nice chunk of XP.
So i got a few gold eagles winning a few missions and bought the ability to carry bombs ... Dropped a few over the enemy runway, but I'm not getting a great deal of XP .... was like 50 ... I Dont seem to have a bomb view though like in the tutorials, Is that because its a light bomber?

And thanks for the advice above, I'm just about to go give it a shot
With the russians, they have 3 lines of bombers in low tier
Real bomber(tier3), HeavyAttacker/bomber(tier3) and light bombers(tier2))
maybe you have the heavyattacker(yellow one) so you need to upgrade your plane to have bombs

to make some damage on enemy base you need bombs of 500kg/1000lb(at least 4 of them in one bombing run or a really fast reload(i use the eagles for that, fast crew upgrade) to make it worth the time), 1k kg/2k lb or 4k lb or mixed

low tier (3) bomber for bombing enemy base are the US with the cataline (4 x 1k lb) and the tier 3 japanese (faster in speed and less bombing runs) (2x1k kg bombs)

Tier 6 Russian bomber its one of the best to destroy enemy base (the best until tier 11), its better than the wellington

Tier 11 Russian bomber have great bombs, bad speed but a lot of them (like 4 of them)

Tier 13 US (two flying fortress)

Russian bomber are the best bombers in low/med tiers, lots of great bombs (1x100kg its enough to destroy a heay tank and you have like 6 of them since tier 3) and bombers. do you need to sink destroyers? No problem. You can equip 3 x 500kg so you can destroy 3 destroyers without reload

BUT REMEMBER. be carefull when youre bombing 'cause sometime you can encounter enemy fighters (watch out for enemy's Ki's (japanese heavy attackers) ) so, if youre going to bomb enemy base, you need to be at least like 5km of altitud (more its better because more time of bombing without being shot down)

Greetings

u have to dive on the target then it will be visible !

50kg(100lb) are great bombs becuase its enough to destroy any ground target in low tier without putting yourself in great danger.

Arcade works better for me than historical
1.- you dont need to land to reload (a little more time for another bombing run that returning to the base and coming back)
2.- less time waiting for a match

That technique its great for leveling up bombers(i use it with all my bombers) until you have bombs that make a decent damage to enemy base 'cause its the same or more XP in the same time.

Yeah, I see the targetter show up when I'm in a dive, but I could have sworn there was a "Bomb bay doors view" straight down, Maybe I just imagined that ...
I'm getting the hang now, It's just really hard earning enough XP to train my crew.
I'll definately look up some of the stuff above, thanks SixthKnight!

There's a scripted one in the tutorial, you can activate it manually in-game, but I can't remember the hotkey. That and it's generally not a good idea to watch the bomb if there are any enemies around (or if you haven't pulled out of your dive, but that one kinda goes without saying :P ).
It's the "U" key to activate bomb view. Very useful when you learn to bomb to see where they actually fall and just how long a drop is
It does seem silly that 'bombers' don't have any bombs, I guess that is what happened with the plane in reality it was used in a non-bombing role at first.

50kg bombs will kill static non-pillbox targets. Usually only takes a couple of missions to unlock something heavier. Alternatively you could pay GE to unlock the bombs.

The problem is that for them to work, you have to hit pretty much dead center for anything other than an armored car/mobile AAA. And those tend to vanish pretty quickly, since they can be taken out with machine guns.

IMO, one way to make low tier bombers more important would be to reduce the power of 7.7mm guns against those targets.
F7 is also the default key for bomb sight view, this is the bomb sight that looks kinda like the Norden bomb sight where you can steer the plane through the bomb sight and zoom as well on the ground target.

Note however that many ground attack aircraft and dive bombers do not have this bomb sight and rely on the standard third person bomb marker.

So check with each of the bomber you have and test the key, if the key do not respond then the plane doesn't have a bomb sight (unless you changed the key), if it does you switch to the bomb sight view and your plane goes into autopilot (it will keep the plane level) while your mouse cursor change into the bomb sight course correction control.

Also generally speaking most ground attack aircraft while capable of doing light bombing, and is essentially a light bomber are NOT considered true bomber and often will not have the bomb sight, this includes IL-2, etc since they are intended to strike their target at very close range, not bombing from high altitude. (they are essentially the predecessor of the modern CAS aircraft like A-10, Su-25, etc)

There are however exceptions like Avenger which despite it's small size and agility (it's a torpedo bomber), carries a bomb sight.

Well i got a second bomber, which does have the vertical bomb view ... Must just be the other ones type I'm assuming ... Gonna go try bombing some pillboxes now, Thanks again for the replies all!
