How tf do I grind that without premium?? It will take months to reach even just Rank IV. Your stuck with 300km/h slow planes that have 1x 7mm MG and have a turn-radius thats worse than a B29

With that said, how did you manage to get through the early phases without a mental breakdown??

Italian aircraft especially low rank is actually quite simple and easy. They are the only nation except japan (in fact japan got this idea from italy) in where they utilize HE _HE-I or HE- F) ammo in calibers of .50 caliber. TLDR the .50s have a good edge, and you get them right out the box at the reserve level. Yeah bombers in the early ranks defensively are a bit meh. but if are just looking to grind out the tree I think you will find the fighter lines more than capable.

As in 2-3 months I reached rank V, without premium, it's not that difficult, it's just playing the game (I went full grind so I was in automatic mode) at the end of the day it's fun to play the little Italian planes, they're funny

What initially made me fall in love with WT all over again was playing Italian tree from the beginning, there are a lot of great planes in that line man just push ahead and learn more alongside it.
You'll be fine after rating 3.0 or so.

P.S: Don't play bombers, fighters and strike aircrafts of Italy are lethal.
