Different performance in Steam Deck Gaming mode VS Desktop Mode

I just went through the process of enabling Vulkan on my install of War thunder as i was getting 30-35 fps and i don't remember it being that way when i got my deck. When i run it through desktop mode i get a pretty solid 60-70 fps and then if i switch back to gaming mode it chugs down to 30-35, am i doing something wrong?

I see tons of videos of war thunder running quite high fps so i am very confused, even if i copy their settings, am i doing something wrong? should i redownload it through the store instead of the transfer from my gaming pc i did when i initially installed? i am confused as to why they have different performance now

Perhaps ask Steam about their product. I have never used it.
