What is the $20 War Thunder experience?
I've been playing Dave The Diver and realized something about War Thunder. I've spent over 1000 hours in War Thunder, but have never found anything worth giving them money over. None of the cosmetics or vehicles on sale have ever appealed to me.

But Dave the Diver at $20 and with less than 20 hours in has been very rewarding to me. Same with $50 Cyberpunk with less than 300 hours. I understand there are players that hate those games, but there has to be some monetization that Gaijin is missing that could be appealing to me. I just don't know what it is.

Is part of the problem that I just don't care about competition or rewards? I have just as much fun in an m2A4 as I do in a Merkava. My favorite mode is helo PvE, maybe something that latches onto my enjoyment of just flying around?

That seems kinda like a subjective question.

Would you be looking for more ways to personalize your vehicle like in MechWarriorOnline for instance?

Maybe there's a unique vehicle that you can only obtain through a Premium Purchase?

Gaijin's primary monetization scheme is to reduce the grind and on occasion provide unique vehicles you may be interested in purchasing so if you don't care about the grind, that to me it certainly makes sense that you haven't thrown money at Gaijin.

To me, this is kind of like more "What would catch your eye to consider opening up that wallet?"

$20 of premium goes a long way if you get it on sale. You gain so much more RP/SL and can twiddle with your camos and loading screens. Maybe it's not worth it to you, but I've played a lot of F2P games over the past decade and premium is almost always worth it, because if you're putting in 1,000+ hours, how much is your time worth?

Then you took Gaijin's bait and became a part of the problem.

The game would be so much better without the predatory grinding progression/unlock system (or better yet just scrapped it - make all functional gear unlocked for all players, with only cosmetic unlocks), and if they kept all purchases strictly cosmetic. That and also added an offline bot mode or campaign so players can play the game anytime, even if the servers shut down in the future.

Well depends on what kind of 20€ you mean, do you mean on sale? Low tiers? High tiers? it depends..

But also the game has nothing to offer besides vehicles so.. It's normal to not feel it's worth anything, since also the premium vehicles only feature is to save time and that's it

How do you think a company is going to make money operating a big F2P game like this? They need to pay developers to add more content and to maintain a large amount of servers. If you want to play tanks or planes without grinding, try GHPC or IL-2 Sturmovik or some other sim game. War Thunder is how F2P multiplayer games are.

It does make sense from a product design perspective.

Games like Dave the Diver, Dredge, Cyberpunk, Skyrim or any Bioware game are so much more than simple gameplay excersises - They offer additional escapetism with a story to engage in, character arcs to follow and NPCs to interact with. It's a more personal experience for the player, comparable to books or shows.

War Thunder, Planetside, CSGO, etc. are heavily focused on competition between other players, they don't necessarily need stories or excessive world building to function outside of providing a general idea of what's going on. They're F2P because the players themselves act as content in form of team mates and enemies instead of NPCs, and the only two acceptable ways to monetise such games are through progression boosts and options for individualisation (decals, special vehicles). I'd say those games come closer to sport matches.

In the end it depends on how each individual customer weights the priorities for a purchase - I do spend 30 bucks for the first types of games if they are good, but I don't see the need to spend that amount of money towards the second category, as all it does is usually just for the optics.

Problem with WT is that it doesn't respect your time or your money, it's a bottomless pit where you can sink thousands of dollars into.. so unless if you're prepared to do that, a lot of things feel like a drop in the bucket and almost pointless.
Yeah you can spend $60 on a premium vehicle, 1 vehicle for 1 out of 10 nations, 10 nations with a ground, air, naval and helicopter trees.
You dont need to spend money and the money you do invest into is worth it and good or you could just not spend any money no one here is forcing you it just makes life easier getting premium.

MissNurse Clearly doesnt know anything about economics just ignore her or him. Tbh this game is very generous on the money you spend I always feel the money I spend towards premium is the value im getting with my money it makes my life easier. Other then that if premium wasn't a thing they would probably have a hard time making money.

Easy: Look at angry birds.

With over 4 billion downloads since its release in 2009, Angry Birds has become one of the most successful mobile games of all time. The revenue generated by Angry Birds peaked at $200 million in 2012, primarily from the sales of merchandise and licensing partnerships.
Gaijin could do the same but instead they decide to be predators with chincy marketing schemes......

Apex legends, Warzone, CS:GO, Farlight 84, OW2, TF2. Just to name a few free games where there primary or only income is from skins and nothing to do with p2w or pay to progress.

Firstly, you just named FPS games, these all have many more skin options than WT. Announcers, character skins, weapon skins, dongles, etc. In WT you aren't even looking at your vehicle that frequently, and you're limited to historical options.

Second, Warzone is only successful because it tags along on CoD's brand, if it was standalone, it would not have been able to maintain itself. OW2 is an extremely flawed and now, failed game, definitely not something to aim for. CS:GO and TF2 both started as paytoplay games with everything unlocked. TF2 is primarily played by extremely long-term fans and bots, not a realistic comparison.

would you buy a licensed war thunder hoodie or a tank model that just has war thunder added onto it? War thunder really isn't a game that can be widely marketted with plushies, also angry birds also used ads, so if you want an ad before every grb game go ahead i guess

To be fair, a high quality model set could generate some money if a manufacturer would co-op with Gaijin. Buy the model, scan a code and get some ingame goodies for that vehicle in game.
(I'm just bored enough to come up with marketing ideas)

I honestly wouldn't mind this, id happily have a stand in my house just for model planes/tanks from ingame that you have to build( used to build ships and aircraft models as a kid)
