combat increases lift of wings meaning you get more stable flight
your stall speed is lower once in combat position
in some cases it helps cut away turning time (theres many ways to "turn")
"raised" or default position
decreases drag and allows for more speed
and heres a story: my p51 vs g8n1
gunner takes out my tail control yet i managed to stay in the air by alternating between raised (to get speed and no stall) and landing (to get maximum lift off my wings)
i rather keep my speed going and if i have to turn, just blow away alittle speed for a loop and get guns on faster
I do the same. If I'm in a one on one fight and no one else is around, I will cut throttle a bit, too, so I don't overshot the enemy as I'm getting closer to his tail. If it looks like I will pass him, as a result of my dive, then I will broke off by flying up to the right, usually, to bleed speed, then roll over back on him to take him down.
I did the same in my D-13 except I made it 15km across "Bulge" to my airfield where I landed at 350km/h and used MG 151 to slow me down on the landing strip. All without tail control.
The effects of combat flaps are real.
what?
are you talking about AB?
I've never needed to slow down while booming and zoom for two reasons:
1. I kill the plane before I even get close to his tail.
2. Because i'm hitting a heavy bomber. You deserve to get destroyed if you just sit behind a heavy bomber shooting at him (unless you manage to shoot all the gunners out).
Anyways, OP, combat flaps do make a difference in turn and burn senarios and even when climbing they help. However, landing flaps have proven to be the most useful when needing a really quick turn.
I would be suprised if the OP even plays WT anymore, much ess remembers this thread from OVER A YEAR AGO.....
Good going lol
(ps, I checked his profiles, Iwas right, he has not played in ages and has only 64hrs on record total...)
Way to go!
Well, you my not be doing a "Boom" from a high enough altitude that your speed is so high that it causes your aircraft to lose its turning capabilities. I believe they call that compression.
If I can dive directly down on an enemy without them turning in any direction, I can put a few shots into them and just zoom off. Most of the time I get a kill. However, when in a very fast dive and your opponent tries to turn at all, you must slow down some so you can turn to get guns on your opponent. When I am still coming in too fast, I will go into a high yo-yo to bleed some energy and then come back down on him.
So, when I talk about slowing down, I'm not talking about going slowly - I'm talking about reducing speed just enough so my aircraft can turn just enough to allow me a gun solution, then I zoom off after putting my shots into him.
Oh, and I rarely get close to their tale. I'm shooting from .70km and have my gun convergence set at 500m.
Exactly, and BTW there is no such thing as compression in AB LOL.
I highly recommend learning Bnz NOW. Because when you get into the jet age your gona be doing a lot of it.
Well, there is compression in Arcade - it's just not as severe as in RB or SB. I can't tell you the number of times I've crashed a new plane into the ground when in a dive I couldn't pull up from. And everyone has to learn BnZ tactics as they get more powerful aircraft... or suffer heavy loses. You are definately right about jets.
