so the accuracy of rangefinding really depends on both the distance of the enemy and the skill of your crew but at a certain distance rangefinding wont be very effective. also certain tech trees have better rangefinders than others but then it becomes a whole different scenario once laser rangefinders come into the picture.

That means 800m distance to target. Your gun scope should have little lines marking distance. They’ll say 2-4-6-8 and so on. 2 means 200m. So if it says 800, aim your crosshair above the target until the little line marked 8 lines up on your target. Do note that the ranges are approximate, so they might be a little further or a little closer than exactly 800m. If it gives you the range of 500, there should be a little marker halfway between 4 and 6, which is the 500 line, it just doesn’t have a marker.

Takes a little getting used to, but eventually you’ll be able to guess the range without the rangefinder.

Thanks. I all of a sudden feel so stupid.
Ground vehicles without any form of rangefinder (as a modification) are limited to 1200 meters of precise distance measuring (you must gain 'experts'+'aces'+'leadership' (commander's perk)+'distance measuring' (gunner's perk) maxed to have such limitation). The more points you invest in commander's and gunner's perks, the faster the measurment is conducted, too. Optical rangefinders like on Panther ausf. F or M103 (but the earliest ones can be found on long-range SPAA which are classified as tank-destroyers in our game, like YaG-10 (29-K), 8,8 cm Flak 37 Sfl. or VFW) increase that distance to 2000 meters once installed, and the time required to measure distance is significantly reduced. Finally, laser rangefinders almost instantly measure the distance and set elevation of the gun at the right angle to hit the target, and they can effectively let you hit any target in the boundaries of a tank map (several kilometers). Crew skills don't affect the work of laser rangefinder at all, stock crew and aced crew are equally good with it, it's other skills like reloading (if you don't have an auto-loader), driving, survivability etc. that differ and matter at this point.

also practice using the test drive till you get it down.

just a heads up without a dedicated rangefinder module (They start showing up 7.7 and above) normal range finding can not be trusted even with max crew it can frequently come up short of the real distance and will just say a certain range regardless how far away they are after a certain point eg 1500m will come back as 800. Unless you are using a slow velocity shell dont bother you will quickly get better ad judging the distance then even a max crew in range finding.

Given there’s plenty of people that might look at a jeep with a gun and call it a tank, it’s not so bad if you’re not familiar with scopes. Or maybe you were thinking something else entirely. I’ve done similar where I start to overthink something very obvious and miss the point entirely, we all do it.

The number right about the middle line running horizontaly is your distance.

Cant find much on that but i didnt find this redditor who said to do this "whenever it does happen you can use commander sight to see distance then go back to your gunner and adjust to said distance". The redditor said this on a post 1 day ago abt rangefinder not working.

Another tip, you can look up on the controls "Sight Distance Control". That will allow you to move the gunner sight up and down so you can align it with the distance. I find that much easier than lining up the sight notches by eye.
