The majority of the German tank forces were Panzer IIIs and IVs and their derivatives, and against those, the Sherman was on par or even better than them, depending on which versions and point in time you look at. For instance, when it first entered service in Africa, there were hardly any Panzer IV F2s and no Tigers around, so the Sherman, at that place and time, was actually the best tank on the field as a whole.
It's also worth pointing out that it was much cheaper to produce and maintain in large numbers, and it also had a lot more upgrade potential than, say, a Panzer IV.
