New and confused by red/blue colors

I just started playing War Thunder for the first time about 15 minutes ago, and picked the German (Axis) aerial side. Going into multiplayer missions I noticed in the mission map I am on the blue side of the map, so I figured blue = friendly.

However once in combat I noticed Japanese insignia on the red planes, while many of the blue planes are P-26 (which is a Boeing plane). Can anyone help me make sense of this?

Default colors are blue for your team and red for the enemy team. The nation of the players doesnt matter. You can change the colors you see in the options.

Unless you're playing RB or Simulator modes, then teams are separated by faction.
