its a stupid question but I am curious.

Me too, i've always wondered why gaijin is gaijin.

They're secretly Japanese agents infiltrating the Russian government through the video games industry. Their ultimate plan is to unleash a giant mutant snail that shoots lightning from its eyes on Moscow, as this is Putin's only known weakness.

That sounds awesome yet terrofiying.

Also, "gaijin" is a term used in contempt by Japanese for non-Japanese.

Yeah, but its also refers to Foreigners (also Gaikokujin)

yeah, gaijin is contemptful
gaikokujin seems to be more polite (according to the Japanese)

True, I wondered this the moment I saw it when I started the game. Why a company would use such a name. If you said that around a bunch of Japanese, you'd get a lot of odd looks. Almost like saying the N word to black people... almost.

nooo, it would be like saying "whitey" around a bunch of black people.

Harr, yeah. maybe not quite like the N word. I was told not to say it around my Dad's friends. It would be too rude and impolite. You hear a bunch of japanese saying it, they're not being kind to whom ever they're referring to.

biased towards USSR.

If Gaijin were a US company it would be US biased, if it were a British company it would be British biased, seriously there is no Russian bias. If anything, with the battle ratings of US planes it is US biased.

If you have trouble destroying USSR planes and tanks then I recommend revising your own playing strategy because I and many of my friends have no such problems.

As for this thread, if it is really so important for you to know why the game company has its name then maybe you should go to their web site and ask them there.

. You know asking at "their web site" will produce no real results.
I apologies, it's just I don't see why this is so important.

The main issue with the question is that nobody knows other than the people at Gaijin so it would be wrong of us to come up with our own reason. If going to their official web site will produce no real results then I don't know what will.
Ludenburger Oct 17, 2014 @ 8:56am
Yeah, but do you just answer at the "Questions to the Team" on the forum? Or Email them directly?
MurderChickenXL Oct 17, 2014 @ 10:22am
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking a question on the Steam forums. Steam is full of knowledgeable people (some not so much) and you are far more likely to get a fast response here than anywhere else even for some non-Steam games.

Gaijin isn't always derogatory, depending on who is using it and why. Maybe they chose it because it sounded cool (they aren't the only company!) and it originally just meant in the literal sense "outside person" (http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/gaijin.html), possibly a reference to how Gaijin saw itself as an Indie company outside the triple-A title mainstream, though this seems directly contradicted by their threat to sue someone had already used the name for 7 years (gaijin.com) going all the way back to 1995 (I'll let you google that for yourself).

Guess you will have to ask them directly though as it looks like you aren't likely to get a reliable answer here. If you do get a response please feel free to share it with us here.
