Do you not find the analouge sticks too twitchy? what mode do you play? :)
One tip - Switch W and S to elevator (S for pitch up) and make L Shift and Ctrl throttle. Change Space to free look and find another binding for bombs.
This setup makes it far easier to turn fight using the keyboard. You won't be using your throttle very much in dogfights anyway. You can control your plane using WASD while keeping the camera trained on a pursuing enemy. It also makes turn fighting a whole lot easier. When you're chasing an enemy just stop pressing the keyboard keys and the plane will start following the mouse again, this makes for easy aiming.
Mouse & Keyboard. No need for some other sort of controller to be good in this game.
I've had this same exact experience.
I wanted to play with a 360 controller, and I tried, but it never even came close ..I even tried the Logitech Extreme 3D pro joystiock.... nuh-uh ... its funt to 'control' the plane with a joystick, but not nearly as effective.
Mouse and Keyboard are way superior for control and situational awareness.
vehicle control is important ...but situational awareness is absolutely vital ! ..... you cant look around as fast or nearly as accurate with a controller as you can with your mouse/keyboard.
(( not sure if this is the case when flying the realistic fight models, specifically jets, perhaps joystics are superior with jets if you have a professional joystick ... I'm not into jets yet, so maybe someone else can chime in with this playstyle experience comparison. ))
( I wish I had a VR or Oculus headset for situational view and a Professional joystic/throttle/rudder setup for plane control .... but I dont.. so with what I have, mouse and keyboard wins hands down. No contest.)
Some really good tips thanks man! and thanks everyone else for their input.
Mouse and keyboard it is then, anything else is just an uphill struggle lol!
