The KV-85 is a tank, that has an IS-1 cannon on a KV-1 chassis.IS-1 is better, due to the armor thickness and its slope.

if you have other tier iv tanks then get the is-1 otherwise if you dont it will put you in tier iv battles while you might only have tier III tanks

The IS is mediocre, it has sloped armor, but it's turret can be penetrated frontally without any problem, and it also gets one shotted quite a lot, so it's like a big medium tank.
My advice is to go for the IS and grind to the IS-2, It's the same thing, but you have a 122mm cannon on it.

If you take 15 shells out of hte IS1 the turret is clear of ammunition, so then it will be harder to ammo rack from the turret

if you have the IS-1 you get matched against ridiculously good tanks like the IS-2 Model 1944
get the KV-85 first so you don't get stomped by tanks that are much better than yours

The seem pretty similar to me, same gun, practically the same hull, etc. I personally went with the KV-85 since it has a slighlty lower BR and so won't pull my T-34 85s up any higher in matchmaking. But if you ant to have a full heavy tank lineup or are only playing with one tank (such as in SB) then you should probably go for the IS-1.
