An easy way to get Simulator Battles could be via the Events Tab, there are RB and SB events every day held there
Trust me, I feel ya, im a 24/7 MS Sidewinder FFB2 user here...
As much as WT wants to cash in on being a simulator, it is FAR from one and DOES NOT catter via design to the Sim Fanbase.
The biggest issu is NOT that they feel that way, its that it WASNT how the game was started.
If ya hop on the Way-Back Machine and read archived coppies of the WT main site you can see that durring closed Betta and Early Open the Main Site actualy stated that Mouse Aim was a LEARNING MODE, and that the game was designed to allow unfamiliar players to use M/KB but that it WAS DESIGNED for the Joystick or gamepad as the "preffered" method.
Unfortunantly, shortly after going Open Betta, too maney of the FPS/MMO noobs with M/KB cmplained about getting rofl-stomped by JS users, which is all fairness is HOW IT SHOULD BE IN A FLIGHT SIM.
Gaijins Asnewer was to buff the MA mode, and "accidentally" break the JS controll at coincedentally the same time.
They have now spent uwards of a year getting the JS "issues" "Fixed" one axis at a time. I use quaotes becuase I personaly think to one level or another, that the issues are either intentional or non-fixable, just my opinion though.
For a JS to be even slightly competitive against MA in this game you must spend upwards of mutliple hourse setting it up. Most JS pilots who do well in the fighters in this game have, I would say, spent a min of 2hrs or more on fine tuning their controlls. Gaijin cant be bothered to make a flight game with decent stick controlls, so their ansewer is to give you an insane level of custom options and then say to you, "figure it out".
You will have the normal sensitivity and deadzone, but on top of that you have Non-Linearity curves, mutipliers, cutoffs, max and min axis settings etc. Rather than make a decent stick system they made a universal one that you must figure out and confiugure for yourself. After its all said and done, you will STILL be at a disadvatage, as you have to deal with flight drift, gun recoil, etc that are all auto-fixed by the Computer in MA modes.
Long and short, if ya want to Flight Sim experiance with a stick, go back to IL or DCS, as you will not find it here.
If ya want a quicker and easier experiance of flight (but not combat) than DCS but are willing to handicap yourself fly in WT with a stick.
If ya want a quicker and easier experiance with Combat, and dont care of the "feeling" of flight, play WT witha M/KB.
But dont expect to get a game on equal grounds to a MA user with a sitck in WT, it wont happen. Gaijin is not going to alienate their main player base (people with M/KB) just to catter to the Sim base with sticks, no matter how mcuh we point out that they are riding on our hype or that they SAID sticks were meant to be the preffered method in the begining.
Thanks for the advice...Ill give it a go now...I still have a lot of joystick setting up to do (Im a bit finnicky about getting it all just right).
Maybe see you all in game!
I love it, but I'm on the grind for jets so I'm sticking to AB.
But not so Im 'amazing'...just because over the years I have really got a feel I like....put simply, I like a very slow reaction to JS movement (a smooth line on the graph) all the way to the 'detents' that the X52 pro has just before max deflection...then past that detent....maximum inputs....
That way I can 'feel' teh point I need to be if a hard pull is required : D
Just a personal preference...and thats what im in the process of doing now...though the set up is markedly different in War Thunder than any other 'Sim' Ive played.....so its all a bit trial and error...and the defaults were predictably terrible : D
Anyway, Ill give the game a go....it seems to fly ok...I havent been impressed with the way the gusn are working to be honest.....they seem a bit 'laser beam' arcade..little dispersion and drop etc....Im a noob though so Im not passing judgement....I didnt detect any recoil effect either....thoguh as I said..its EARLY days : D
It does surprise me that Sim Mode is really not played much.....there must be loads of folks from il2 1946..... (which with HSFX is still my personal favorite WW2 Sim....and by the way still EASY to find a well populated game on.... I havent yet tried the WW2 birds in DCS...which may be another option..and ofc the new il2 Stalingrad).....where are all the Il2 refugees?
I remember for ages everyone moaning there was no new WW2 simulator.....this one has great graphics at least, if a simplified Flight Model (so Ive heard..once again, I cant judge on 3 or 4 hours gameplay with crap JS settings)....
I suppose they all got scared off by the gradual favoritism towards the arcade side?
Anyway...Im going to give the game a fair crack of the whip.....though I love sims as hardcore as possible..im really not at all opposed to arcade games as long as they are good fun.....if it turns out the game is juts better with Mouse and KB...Ill probably even give that a go and forget about it being a sim at all!
(or play the Tank game and forget flying all together, in WT at least : D)
Thanks for the answers though all, just what I was looking for....
Im going to make some coffee and join a game right now in fact
(if there is one)
I hope so! Ill be in game in the next 20 mins...
ps
AB = Arcade mode (arcade battles?)? I suppose people just do that to grind the currencies and Xp etc?
Im that new Im not even familiar with all the points lol...
Anyway, enough talk from me...ive done more reading and chatting than playing as it stands!
Cheers!
(PS..il2 1946 with HSFX...some of my fav matches were the Mig V Sabre Korean war Mp battles...superb....cant understand why 'Mig V Sabre' hasnt had a more up to date game...its perfect for multiplayer : D)
We get Mig vs Sabres in WT, but the grind to T5 jets is so long that without a premium account you will not see jets for upwards of a year or more. There are exceptions, and a non-premium player with nothing to do (ie job, school, family) could probably grind to Jets in a month, if they played well and spent 8hrs a day doing it.
Realistically though, as a new player, you will need a year or more in game before you research up to the first line jets.
Admitadly, I am not racing to jets myself, but as I am now aproaching ym 2yr mark on WT, I can say I still have no jets. I own the Top Teir Bombers for the Japan line and US line, as those were my goal, and am now working on getting my first Sabres (american and Japan), but it does not change the fact that I am alsot 2 years in and still have not ground out a whole nations yet. Some of that is my fault in what I have chosen to research, but allot of it is just the grind being insane for a non-prem player.
Also, if ya think planes have lazers now, go fly some using MA. There is a very real recoil for JS users (eg, in an F4F recoil will raise your AOA by 3 degrees per burst, and a full overhaet can pull an F4 out of a 13 degree dive with no elevator). This recoil is instantly compensated for by the MA instructor, so where as the streams of bullets at least move a bit for a JS user, they litteraly fly perfect in rows for MA. True lasser power there :)
Aside form that, if you are looking for wingmates, add me on steam and hit me up. If ya have a mic and teamspeak (free) you can hop ont he 710th's server and fly out with us a bit, though we are more of an AB group than SB or RB.
Im not familiar yet with how it all works..having my first MP game in a minute (ive spent all my time doing the tutorials for teh coin and setting up my JS...which is is still not as I like it
I may well hit you up over the weekend, but Im going to have a few games to learn the lay of the land this evening..so as not to be a liability : D
Thanks. Mayeb see you in game over the weekend!
By the way (to everyone else too), seems a friendly community...quick and good answers to a noob over here, and same over on the forums...
Reminds me of the Paradox games forums...which also is a good community.
Thanks all
Im cool with that, but Ill need to set that up (Steam or ingame) due to only having this PC running for 10 days or so : D
havent had a chance to set up voice yet.
You get SL in game after every match, but there are VERY FEW chances to get GE ingame.
GE (normaly) must be bought with real money. You get a few when you start for the trining, then a few more for a couple of the low level progesion milestones, then its dont.
After that the only chances for GE free are a few times a year when the hold GE events, then you must complete in game tasks to earn the GE.
GE can be spent on Crew Advancement, Premium Vehicles, Premium Time, Plane Upgrades, and Purchasing planes through Convertible RP.
Of those only the first three are worth doing, and IMHO in that order. I drop 100GE on a bomber slot for the CP needed to qualify 4 gunners for the early bombers, then look into a prem low tier or premium time.
for us, yeh, mostly, we use voice allot both to keep us entertained between games and to wotk as a team in game.
We actualy use Teamspeak 3, it free and setup is sub-5 minutes for most. Has a nice setup wizard.

peace out :)
You get a lot more RP a lot faster in AB than any other game type. And yes it's arcade battles.
For now I normally get 1500-2500 RP per AB game (only talking about vehicle RP not mod RP).
