If you are in a city or other environment with less than 100 meters of visual range, keep an ear out for enemy engines. Sound is quite poor currently, and friendly engines are far too loud from too far, but you can often pick out an enemy engine and get an idea of how close/where they are to you.
Like on a map I played the other day, I know most fast vehicles tend to go around the edge of the city in the middle of the map, I was playing an AA to get faster RP to unlock something and I ended up with 3 or so kills on lighter targets because they were all so interested in flanking the city they didn't even see me.
So it just takes time, it can be or might be frustrating to begin with but it's all a learning experience.
Using Binoculars gives a 3x to effect of keen vision.
