Out of all the evil game publishing companies, from Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda and Illfonic, Gaijin is by far the worse.
I can't give advice on how you can have fun because that's subjective. I especially don't advocate for grinding War Thunder because the grind is inherently designed to get you to spend money on the game.
If you're not having fun figuring out how to operate your vehicles, learning mechanics of the game, learning how opposition vehicles work etc. then this game is not for you.
No matter how many hours you put into the game you will never finally achieve ultimate victory since there is none to be had. It is simply a battle generator. If you don't want to just fight battles War Thunder is a strange choice of game to play.
The main issue is players do not want to fight battles in certain vehicles they have the ones they want in mind and this is the root cause of the grind. War Thunder has a progression that many players want to avoid. The origin of all the "you have to pay"
The game is simple if you begin at tier I and complete the tier I challenges before going to tier II. Suspend expectations of rapid advancement and just fight battles and learn before trying to be a higher tier pro.
Also look at the Gaijin.net achievements. By the time you win 100 battles at tier I you will have the vehicles you need to move to tier II's 100 battles and so on.
Determining worth and enjoyment is only something you can do.
That means, if you are ok with playing early or even late ww2 stuff go ahead. If you want to drive Abrams/Leopard and such, don't even bother, it takes hunderds of hours maybe thousands to reach that point.
The devs have some questionable practices sadly like putting premium vehicles up in br and making them at times pretty useless and forgetting about them , but i like the game and it's my most played game i believe on steam.
