Anyone getting a "Written off due to damage" Death at the end of battles?
When playing Air RB if I am even slightly damaged at match end I get a death and it says "Written off due to damage" which doesn't make any sense because my plane was flying perfectly (I had a yellow wing but that was it)

This has happened multiple times in matches and results in me having a counted "death" so I have to spend more SL for no reason.

My A-1H was damaged but still flying. Time expired before I could reach airfield to repair. Aircraft written off due to damage. (Kill was awarded to enemy player)
If an enemy gets a "Severe Damage" on you, at the end of the match if you have not repaired they get a kill.

This mechanic was introduced a couple months ago to prevent players flying their damaged planes away from the battle area to avoid being counted as destroyed.

It is sometimes not fair to the damaged player, granted, but "still flying" doesn't mean the plane is capable of steering and landing.

The main issue is in Severe Damage detection. Sometimes you set someone on fire and rip half their wing off and just get a Critical Hit, sometimes you nick some paint on their flap and get a Severe Damage.

This, but this is much more preferable than the previous kill stealing problems and the issue you described. I rather take the few cases where it could work better than not have this mechanic at all. It definitely can be tuned to work a little bit better.

As others mentioned, this is a relatively new mechanic (implemented just over a year ago) and is intentional. It was mentioned in our news post as to why:

At the end of a battle, all severely damaged aircraft will be considered destroyed — players in this state will receive the following message: “Written off due to severe damage”. A death in the statistics will be credited, and the player who caused the severe damage will be credited with a destroyed aircraft, where the rest of the reward will be given. This is done so that players with a severely damaged aircraft don’t try to hide and avoid combat in the hope that they’ll not be finished off.

But personally, I looked at it this way- The cost to repair the damage exceeds the cost to make a new aircraft, so they write it off and buy a new one. Actually fairly common in the US with car accidents and insurance.
The mechanic works great for props, but gets a little wonky with jets. Sometimes the damage a jet took will seem pretty minor but still count.
Yea as said before severe damage will cause that to happen. Sometimes I’ve had severe damage with my plane broken up into 5 pieces while on fire, and other times I lose a bit of my wing but I can still fly it. It is frustrating when you are trying(and are able to just fine get back to base) but time runs out before you can do so. It would be nice if they changed it to give you more of a chance to RTB if you still are able to land with severe damage.

happened to me too. In the real world, if it can fly, you're not dead. think it's kinda dumb. if you're plane is damaged, you go back to base for repairs, you don't just fly around lol.

Some people used to fly a damaged plane like that around to stall for AI or something to end the match because their team was ahead on tickets but they lost everyone but themselves and they were damaged. Flying to base meant the enemy could find them, so they’d just prolong the match hoping they’d win from AI units or time or something.

The issue here is that what constitutes as severe damage to a prop plane doesn’t necessarily translate to all aircraft in the game, which is why the mechanic works well in lower tier play but gets weird as you go up in BR.

It’s also worth noting that, just because you can still fly and control the aircraft, that doesn’t mean it’s still combat capable. If your plane is so damaged that you can definitely still fly back and land, but anything resembling a combat maneuver would send you into the ground or just be impossible, your aircraft isn’t really “fly able” anymore. Though severe damage applies after specific criteria of damage is met which can include just losing the vertical stabilizer despite that being decently survivable damage.

Kinda just depends really.

I understand severely damaged aircraft. However my aircraft was not even close to severely damaged. My statement of "I had a yellow wing" was not an exaggeration as I did have a yellow wing.

I know its a fairly new thing as often I have also had a plane lose all its engines and some parts of the wing/tail and it was still counted as survived at the end of the battle so I will assume it is not working properly right now. Hopefully it will be better at detecting such in the future.
