anyway, 400 bucks would be good for a quest 3s, plus the quest 3 and quest 3s are literally the exact same minus the camera placement and resolution on the lens being SLIGHTLY worse
also the quest is the cheapest good headset on the market right now, plus you will 100% start to get into other games like dcs in vr and vtol vr
and the quest 1, 2 and 3 all have great support in games
I keep hearing good things about the quest 3, but am I not paying for the fact that it has an onboard computer and hard drive, as well as controllers that I'll never use?
If this is the case, does there exist systems that plug into your pc and act as an extra monitor with head tracking capability to look around in the cockpit? I don't own a console, nor do I think I'll ever download and play games that would use the hand held controllers.
It can be used as either an independent gaming system or has an accessory to your PC.
Frankly, you might be better off just looking at snagging a TrackIR 5. I've had mine for 10 years, still works great, and your gaming monitor is going to give you a much better "view" experience than any VR headset is currently capable of producing. A VR headset is a fantastic immersion tool, but if you're planning on not using all the bells and whistles as you mentioned, the TrackIR might be better suited for what you're looking to get.
You'll want to get the TrackIR 5 with the Track Clip Pro if that's a route you would like to consider. I've provided a link for it below off Amazon.

I've considered a head tracker, but with jet combat, trying to track something way over your shoulder, you would have to turn the sensitivity quite high to avoid turning your head far enough to not be able to see the screen. With the higher movement sensitivity I feel like that may ruin the immersion.
I think I'm quite sure that I want an actual pair of vr goggles.
i have an old HTC vive set collecting dust after i got sick of it, it is incredibly uncomfortable to use over summer down here !
It's the distortion, especially in wide angle screens, I guess.
I would suggest that you try out before buying.
as others have mentioned, an htc vive or head tracker like trackir or tobii would be best.
tobii is great because its also an eye tracker which is huge for games that support it, it can also be used for windows hellow. for any games that dont support tobii, you can use opentrack and it works like native
been tempted a few times but not pulled the trigger on it yet, i would have to add the cost of a new monitor also cause i wanted to pair it with an ultra wide.
considering my vive hardly got used before been chucked to the side im not sure.
You got it wrong, Track IR is less straining then VR ;
With VR if you want to look behind your back you litteraly have to turn that way,
With Track IR, they are all design so you only got to turn your head maybe 20 degree.
Some people feel nauseous after a certain amount of time playing VR,
You dont get that with TrackIR
You also get a better screen resolution with trackIR.
I would go as far that learning the F-14 in DCS without VR is too cumbersome.
Also if you want immersion why complain about turning the head. You can still do that, i.e. turn your head, unlike real necks in a 5+ G turn.
You should get VR though. It changes everything, far beyond just being able to look around more easily. It's difficult to describe, but bluntly put it gives you perspective and "feel" that isn't possible with 2d.
