The general concept of helis is to sit behind a mountain and sling agms from 8km-10km on some random tanks until a SAM-system kills you.
You can either play anywhere between 200 and 500 or so hours to unlock helis without paying or you simply buy a 50 dollar premium heli but unless you have a 60 dollal premium tank that you'd need to use in order to actually use the sniping missiles you'll be stuck with going in for rocket runs, which most of the time you won't last longer than 20 seconds of getting near the battlefield.
War Thunder isn't for fun VR heli experience, helis are literally just a cashgrab milking gimmick
- Do I have to grind to get a heli, and how long?
Yes you need to grind helicopters. Helicopters become available for research and purchase only with the ownership of at least one Rank 5 vehicle of a nation that has helicopters. Buying a premium or gift helicopter also gives access to helicopter research instantly and access to the helicopter you bought, regardless of having a rank 5 vehicle (tank or plane) of that nation.
- If I can buy my way to a heli, how much will it cost me?
$60 for a premium helicopter.
- Will it take a lot of practice for comfortable flight? I've flown Elite Dangerous and IL-2 in VR. Helis - only in Battlefield and with keyboard+mouse.
It's very easy to fly helicopters in War Thunder - it is easier than in Battlefield with a mouse and keyboard. However, as in any game, more practice will make you better overall.
- Are there practice modes with bots or static targets?
Yes, you can test fly helicopters (if you have progressed through the tree) and test fly premium helicopters against bots. You can also set up a custom match of your own or a modding mission to your desire.
- Will it perform ok with my hardware?
Yes your hardware is more than enough. You meet the recommended requirements which can be seen on the store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/236390/War_Thunder/
I mean, people do enjoy Heli VR in WT. This is some of the most popular heli VR gameplay here:

If you intend to use helicopters in ground battles, you'll have to grind tanks to have a lineup unless you're fine with spawning with nothing but unguided rockets, flying towards the enemy team and getting handed a darts or two by the first tank that spots you, let alone a missile by an SPAA.
Your only saving grace will be the botched damage model all helicopters have that lets them tank shots that would realistically drop them easily.
And while we are at it, since the second video you posted is about the AH-1S early.
Now, I would like to ask you how exactly you (or rather the devs in charge) think how one can even get that thing using the UH-1B. 380k RP by doing rocket runs with 38 mighty mouse rockets in an aircraft that's absolutely unarmored.
Due to the superb accuracy of AI, it's almost impossible to play in both ground assault and heli PVE.
Please, how is one supposed to play the UH-1B the way it is currently implemented while needing as much RP as required for a top tier tank?
Edit: So far I used helicopters in a total of 2488 battles, not counting the heli PVE and ground assault matches, so I might just know a little bit about tech tree grind
