Noob question: How in the world do you shake someone?
I only play Arcade ground wars or whatever it is called so far and when I get someone on my back no matter what I do they almost always end up killing me, try going up down left right sideways upside down twisty turny and anything else you could think of but there they still are, chipping away at my plane.

dive down try to lose them with speed, loop up or around them. It all depends on what plane he has and you have. You cant shake a zero or ki but you can shake planes like p47's and Bf109's.

Most planes are beefed up ufo in arcade so its almost impossible to lose tails. Thats why you see so much ramming, ppl would rather end both of themselves then get a tail and just give the other guy points. Best you can do is go into a cloud of friendles and pray they will help.

In arcade, its pretty much imperative that you force overshoots.

When they are coming in for a pass, cut your engine and turn hard, once in one direction, then another, and right when they slide past, flip your engine back on full and slide in behind them.

There is a lot of things you can do in the other game modes though.

I agree with sloth.
Check this out (https://www.youtube.com/user/GrmlZGaming) he can give you some good tips if you are using a joystick. Otherwise I suggest drawing them in close then throwing down your flaps, cut engine, and pull into a sharp climb. This is a last ditch effort and you will most likely take serious damage, but they tend to shoot past and line you up for a nice shot on their rear. Then just limp back to base for repair, hope this helps.
P.S. don't forget to regain full throttle and raise your flaps back up so you can actually pursue after they shoot past, it does you no good to stall out.

If someone did that I would try aiming for free shots on one of their wings or finish them off with rockets if have them. If they dont get shot down, most of the time they end up getting pilot ko'ed or rammed though...

What i do: Slam on the airbrake drop the landing gear and flaps and watch em shoot right past you and now your on their tail.

Same stuff GrmlZGaming talks about, but those ideas probably won't work for typical mouse users. Do you know how hard it is to do a steady barrel roll around an enemy without a joystick? I do haha!

It also depends heavily on how close the tailing aircraft is, if they're higher than you, how fast you and they are going, and what aircraft both of you are flying.

For instance, if your aircraft isn't particularly fast and they're in a biplane, then your best tactic is to not die before reaching friendly aircraft; shaking them is almost impossible. If you are in a biplane, make sure you're using flaps if you have them since some newer players don't really know about that. Some aircraft have very little chance of outmaneuvering an opponent, whereas others can do it fairly easily. It would help if we knew what specifically you were flying, and what typically was on your tail (although the former is the most helpful). And also, the overshoot advice is critical due to arcade flight models making everything more maneuverable and better at climbing than is otherwise realistic.

If you're in a zero..cut throttle..deploy flaps..tight TIGHT circle 100 feet off the ground untill they stall and crash...got 2 out 3 fighters on my ass to kiss the crops that way..the other guy had a thought and decided to burn outtta there since they were flying faster planes..

I've been on both sides of this! The P-39 has a tendency to throw me in the dirt since it can't keep any speed in a turn.

What exactly does "deploy flaps" mean in this situation and how would I do it with the default KB/M setup?

cant remember what key it is (its usually F by default in many flight games). flaps are usually used to help slow your plane when you land but also used in dogfighting tactics. when it says flaps are down, that means they're "deployed" and you should see them move downward on edge of wings your wings. hit it flaps button again to bring them back up.
