Pay to progress, some pay to win here and there. In my opinion the fun starts slowing down around 3.0 and takes a steep, abysal dive at 7.0. Good news is unlocking tanks up to BR 3.0 goes fairly quickly. Aircraft are fun too. I would not start if you are a completionist, and I do not think the grind to higher tiers is worth it. I've been playing off and on for over 10 years (rip) and don't bother with high tiers at all. (ground battles especially) Tried it, it's not fun. The maps aren't made for it, the matches end much more quickly, the balance is lacking, and the nature of the game is drastically different. In short the mobility, firepower, and protection of modern tanks don't 'play' the same as 40's AFV. Less nuance and variation, too many aides. Nobody respawns, the maps are much too small 90% of the time.
Personally I enjoy tanks in this game squarely in the prewar-ww2 era but refuse to grind for the new shiny things, and play GHPC for the more modern armor fix.
