Pick the ammunition belts that pack as much of these types of ammo as possible.
For example, the tracer belts for US .50cal machineguns are pure API-T, which is why people tend to nickname it the flamethrower (it looks like one because of the tracers, and it sets everything on fire in no time because it only fires API).
Then you have your 20mm cannon. The 2 main different ones are for ground targets and armored targets. Your cannons are often used to take out engines and/or penetrate, explode, and start fires or tear pieces off of planes. For this, you often want lots of High Explosive Incendiary (HEI), High Explosive Fragmentation (HEF) or Fragmentation Incendiary (FI).
So, for me, I like to start fires so I would take a Ground Target or Universal belt for my 20mm cannon and an Air Target belt for my 12.7mm. So, basicly, for small MG's you want to pierce armor and kill crew members (mainly the pilot so you want Armor Piercing rounds) and for the cannons, you want to blow pieces off the plane and start fires (so you want rounds that explode and start fires). But try to play around with different combonations of Cannon and MG belts and find what works best for you.
