It shares much of the gameplay with WoT, but has a completely different timeline. At the most, it's a "modern-day scenario alternative" of sorts that's likely going to be played in parallel with WoT.
And compared to WT, it has the same issues as WoT - gameplay is very different, so people who want to have WT gameplay (i.e. focus on internal damage rather than hitpoints etc.) above all else won't be all that interested in AW. The completely different timeline as is the case with WoT vs AW is just the icing on the cake.
That's not to say that AW is a bad game, because it isn't. I know that much from the stress test. But it's also a long shot away from being as good as the hype makes it out to be.
There's nothing like WT out there sadly.
