The HMS mode allows you to engage an ACM lock by pointing your mouse courser on a target, then manually locking the target your "Looking" at.
This allows you to lock targets that are not on your nose (off bore sight) so that when you bring your aircraft into firing position, you waste no time locking the target, or it enables you to launch a missile (Sidewinder or Sparrow) at odd angles. Pros and Cons to doing this, but it's an especially valuable feature when you start getting access to AIM-120s as it enables you to launch against an attacker while maintaining a reliable defensive position to defeat other ARMs coming your way.
I know the functions of the radar modes, but thanks for the explanation. I'm concerned with the fact that if I transfer the mode from SRC to HDM, I can't switch back to SRC and I can't deal with it. I get stuck on HMD or HMD PD mode for the whole game.
