It has helpful links to build up your knowledge of radar and radar guided missile attack/defense.
However, to take full advantage of the AIM-54's capabilities you'll want to be using TWS mode (Track While Scan). The keybinding you want to use to change which radar mode you're using is "Change Radar/IRST mode." This will enable you to guide the AIM-54 towards a target without locking them up from your radar. Once the AIM-54 gets within range of its own on board radar system, you no longer need to keep your radar pointed at the target.
"How do you know when the AIM-54 is guiding itself?"
Your radar scope will show an intercept line to the target. If you see a segmented line with your potential target having a large circle around it, that means you are currently guiding the missile. Once the line becomes solid, you no no longer need to guide the AIM-54 to the target and can turn away.
The AIM-54 has a limited ability to continuing to track a target if you break your TWS lock before its own onboard radar guidance kicks in, but it's highly inaccurate and will more than likely miss your target(s).
I also highly recommend setting up single press keybindings for your air-to-air missiles.
Weapon lock (air-to-air): This will turn on the missile seeker to attempt to lock-on to a target. Pressing this key again while you're locked onto a target will reset the seeker head to look for a different target, especially if you accidentally lock a friendly.
Fire air-to-air missile: This is self explanatory.
Set to your preferences.
You will require keybinds to move the radar cursor (for example using arrow keys) to semi-manually acquire targets.
I however do not recommend taking over manual control over antenna elevation option. While it allows you to fly level without the need to put nose down/up to find/lock targets from elevated positions. As it can endup being a burden later on in battle.
