Ever since adding new nations, as well as all of the lend lease vehicles (mostly American vehicles, which many of the new minor nations have a ton of), the game hasn't been "historical" or at the very least "semi-historical" when it comes to allies vs axis, or NATO vs Soviet's for quite a few years now.
Also, yes, the game tends to become less fun as you progress further into each nation. Depending, ~7.0 is generally my cutoff for where I stop consistently having fun, because some nations have wildly superior vehicles compared to others, which makes some nations/tiers very unfun to play.
2) Outside of Simulator Battles, matchmaking is pretty open and relies more on just filling teams while maintaining the 1.0 Battle Rating range (meaning if you're matchmaking for a 3.0 match you will face 2.0-4.0 BR vehicles on both sides). There is a bit of a nation-related matchmaking in RB but it is limited to Axis vs Allies and doesn't work most of the time.
3) The crux of the game's issues is the research speed paired with Gaijin marketing the game mostly on modern vehicles you will find at the very end of the research trees. It is abysmally slow and gets slower and slower the higher you go, taking days and weeks and even months to unlock new vehicles unless you have Premium and play religiously. Back before the massive revolt you can see in the reviews if you allow Steam to show off-topic ones, repair costs have also been a major issue, at even middle tiers requiring you to maintain a 2:1+ KD to not *lose money* after the match ends.
The game is at its best when you focus on WW2 ranks, especially considering top tier Realistic Battles become very similar to Arcade Battles.
play for the gameplay, unlock new vehicles at your leasure, enjoy your time spent with what your doing. dont play out of a feeling of necessity to unlock new stuff- dont play for progress. take it slow, have fun. personally, ive nearly hit 1600 hours and i play mainly play WW2 vehicles. i finish 1.0-6.0 in one nation, and i go onto the next.
once you go over the ranks of 6.7, the technological advances of vehicles and weaponry will change a lot. this can be a problem for matchmaking reasons: like pairing your ww2 tanks up against cold war era tanks. unlockable vehicle modifications: your stock, un-upgraded tank will be much, much worse than a fully upgraded tank of the same type. this is not as big of an issue in the earlier ranks. also, in these higher ranks, the gameplay itself also changes in response to vehicles' new technologies. in my opinion, for the worse. you have...
laser range finders to range your shots for you, thermals to see for you, deployable airborne drones to see for you, spawnable airborne drones to send guided missiles down on you, stabilizers to make movement a less dangerous/calculated risk, guided bombs, guided missiles, helicopters hiding behind hills and sending ordinance onto you from 5km away... i recommend you stay away from anything modern in this game. not worth it.
Pay to win
Dodgy game mechanics
Bots
Cheats
But it's still worth playing.
Teams are not based by Era nor are they based on Nation alliances, its one large mishmash and the only balance is the BR spread. IE if in a 6.0 you can only ever face 5.0-7.0 players no more no less.
The gameplay doesnt get any harder in fact the gameplay gets easier and easier as you advance, the GRIND is what people mean by it gets worse. Your starting vehicles cost a few thousand RP (XP) and Silver Lions (ingame freemium currency) but if you look you will see that the higher you go in BR the cost of the vehicles DRAMATICALLY increases. Im talking 2,000,000+ silver to get a single vehicle battle ready, 400,000 xp to unlock, another 400,000 to get 100% capabilities. You will notice you make more silver and xp in higher br vehicles but the income does not scale with the cost of the vehicle so the grind gets nearly exponentially longer the higher you go.
But despite it all, I come back for more punishment every day.
Because the game before more and more pay to win, ive seen people buy a whole tree throught intended loop hole
While a player that dosen't pay will literaly spend a thousand hour or more for a single tech tree
( And im a wallet warrior ive spent over 500 euro on this game )
To balance an unfair idea that is air combat by itself deliver the historical context. There is no balance to be found in your mind playing something which is supposed to be inheritly unfair if you don't deliver the enviroment, the same historical friggin odds as they happened in the real world in a given time period.
