Actually it's not all that bad up until that point. Yeah, you'll take a lot longer than people with premium time and even more with premium time and vehicles, but TBH with you Rank III already has everything good you'll experience in this game unless you want modern stuff.

Rank IV will be a pretty hard grind and rank V+ will be hell in a completely F2P account.

If you have some luck you will get some free talismans for some vehicles after putting good battles. Those really help with the grind. You can also get some free premiums from battlepass or events. But that everything will cost you a really big amount of time.

Naval AB get a fast firing boat and target the AI once you master it and have a decent CAS for your level you'll very rapidly get 100k lion games and suddenly you'll be flooded with Lions which makes grinding other trees very easy (personally i recommend spending the cash and getting the Demoins class its a glass cannon but its guns are 8in and autoloaded which gives you a dumby mad rate of fire and dps output which can in 1 life let you get 1-6 kills which is roughly whats needed to get 100k a game depending on what you kill just avoid battleships or battle cruisers as they can and will smite you in a single volley if they find you exposed)

that said it is 100% a grindfest that is hard to explain but if you put in the time to learn what your doing you'll suddenly be enjoying yourself more (also look into what actually earns you more RP if your better at bombing bases and getting confirmed RP that way rather then dogfighting do that then dogfight to help once you get to top teir)

You do not have to spend a cent, i player over 2k hours on and off without spending anything. Got to 9.0 Germany and mid tier ground on a couple other nations. I have played top tier before, don't go for it. Just play the game and have fun, switch to another nation when you get bored of one and just enjoy the game.

its only worth grinding up to about 6.7 for any nation anyway and that does not take that long. Any tier after is ♥♥♥♥ anyway.

Time is money so if you value your time in any way then no, there is no way of grinding without spending time playing the game

Play 2 or 3 different nations, turn auto repair off and bounce between the nations while they repair.

Each tank gets a research bonus for the tank immediately following it so I research out 3-5 tanks to use in a lineup, then buy them all at the same time to upgrade all of your crews to the new lineup at the same time. i.e. Don't buy and train every time you get anew tanks. You'll always be out of money and always uptiering yourself making it harder to mod out your unlocked tanks.

I actually found a Rank 1 line up I really love so I actually grinded out several higher tier tanks despite the research penalty for the tier differences.

In short, find the tanks you like to play and only play when you are having fun. When you start to get "Gaijined" in a battle then take it easy and don't try hard.

Repair costs aren't nearly as bad as they used to be, although if you really do start getting short on silver lions, can always go back to lower tiers.

Always have a decent line up before increasing your BR, you want a few vehicles at a BR or atleast VERY close to eachother before moving up

Enjoy the game on the br you like , if you are able to forget about the grind the game is much more enjoyable.
For me its like why I like playing cs , its about the cool moments you accasionally have. Stuff like owning a tank brs higher then you by outsmarting him or getting loads of kills with a crappy tank.

Yes, you just like... You know, don't spend money, it's really as easy as it sounds, no hidden catch, just don't purchase anything
