The P-40 is most-similar to the F6F, but lacks the Hellcat's climbing capabilities or its impressive bombload (although out of your three it is the only one with ANY bombs). The P-39's carry the firepower of the P-36G in addition to a 37mm, and have somewhat inferior performance to the P-40 for the significant added firepower. It also carries 6 rockets. The P-38 is easily my favorite tier 2 aircraft though; its firepower is the most reliable (being both centrally-mounted, and higher-velocity than the slow 37mm cobra gun); add that to okay maneuverability (good for a heavy fighter, not compared to actual fighters though) and amazing climb rate and you have a really good BnZ aircraft.
Don't forget that the lower-level tier 3 fighters will actually get the same matchmaking (in some cases, better) of your tier 2 aircraft; the F4U-1d and P-47 are both great additions to a tier 2 lineup.
If forced into a turnfighting situation, don't just turn horizontally, turn both vertically and horizontally. Which means, use your engine (WEP helps when you are pointing up into the air, then turn it off as you are pointing down) to both turn and diagonally loop at the same time.
That reason alone is why I bound "shift" to Pitch up - and ramped up the linearity by 200%
Generally, whether your plane is good or bad at climbing, you want to build altitude. With aircraft like the P-40 that are good at diving (and not climbing), this is particularly important, and is usually just a good idea for the US due to how heavy most of their aircraft are.
that is why the P-400 got the nickname "a p-40 with a zero on its tail"
just a awful plane, it takes the only thing the aircobra has (37mm) and downgrades it (20mm).
the P36 can turn and BnZ really well. I would rather take a P36.
the only thing the aircobra has going for it is the giant 37mm, the P400 doesnt even have that. You are left with a flying brick with a tiny gun.
