what belts do you use?
i use stealth for the p51s. i used to do tracers but that just gives me a disadvantage since my aim is pretty decent already

Depends on the need obviously, but it can depend on what rounds are in the belts. I used to use mostly Stealth, but some of the belts were altered to have different ammo types that I didn't like as much. As such, I have been leaning a bit more on full AP belts or Ground belts. Depends on the gun obviously, some guns like the Japanese .50 cal on the Ki-61 have really obnoxious HE rounds so I often use belts with those rounds if I can. Otherwise, I lean towards AP rounds for both ground and air targets on machine guns, moving to HE for cannons.

Point is, its less about whether you use universal, air targets or whatever so much as what specific bullets are in those belts.

People tend to say that AP rounds aren't good at shooting down aircraft, but if you're good enough at aiming such that you can shoot specific parts of the aircraft similar to how you might on tanks, then AP ammo can be very good as you can choose to do things like rip off wing tips, knock out engines, pilot snipe and stuff like that. AP specifically, not APHE or anything with explosive or incendiary filler, can punch through the thin armor plates on some planes to get to the meaty parts like engines or crew and keep going for more damage. I've had my planes take dozens of HE 20mms and still be flying with no engine or crew damage, just surface damage because the HE shrapnel or incendiaries were only hitting the armor. This meant I could take a lot of punishment and still fly, if only barely. I fly the Me 410 at 3.3 with the 50mm gun very often and that thing can tank so much sometimes because of small armor plates covering internal bits, even with just like 5mm or 7mm of thickness. AP ignores that.

That really depends of the plane, unlike you, my aim is pretty bad I would say. So when I play Soviet planes that never carry many shots, I use anti air ammo or anti ground ammo.

All other planes usually also stealth.

But honestly, all the ammo is decent, in all these years, I never felt there is a major difference, unless I am using 20 mm with explosive (anti air) ammo.
