I mean the IS2 is a kv2 with better pen and armor, but the IS1 is bad. The 85mm cannon is worse than the german 88mm cannon.

im past it, play it like the KV-85 and yes the IS tanks are really sluggish (the tiger is far more responsive) the 85mm is acceptable for a flanker, u gotta aim really well and have patience, pick on smaller tanks and know weakspots

Weakspots are the lesser, the only problem is that IS1 85mm cannon has less power than the 122mm and the 152mm. The only projectlie i like in IS1 is the AP and APHE, but still a bit bad like the firepower of t34 76mm cannon tank but with better pen

ye, it can kill a crew in one hit depending on the tank but try for engines, my first shot is the ususal trying to nail the gunner but this gun fires decently quick soo the usual engines, they put out fire, then shot to turret and then hull, might take 3-4 shots for very large tanks but still not too bad.
seriously the 122/152mm shells are pretty overkill and they suck when you fail to one shot kill

The 85mm is one of the best cannons in the game for it's BR, 5.0 to 5.7... the tanks it faces (minus the 6.7's) are all easily kills for it, and often require no more than two hits to the front or side. I was using an IS-1 yesterday, and it was easier to use and has far superior rounds (at it's BR) compared to the Centurion mk. 10! With the L7 105mm of doom!

Atleast, that's my experience with it. What you should know is that it's not the cannon that matters, it's the shells, and the IS-1 gets some really good shells, meaning it can one hit stuff very, very often.

T-34-85 swarms win almost every match I see. I gota agree with MoonPrune, the 85mm is one of the best in-game. The problem with the IS-1 is that like all Soviet heavy tanks, it is slugish and turns like it always has a broken track. Also Moon, is the Centurion Mk.10 that bad? I've been using my Conqueror to grind it out and I am having second thoughs about bothering with it now (damn APDS and HEATFS spalling nerf).

Honestly, it's not the greatest. I can kill enemies, but one hit to the side and I'm dead, whilst I can often go through silly amounts of rounds because they can't pen a T-54 except in very specific places, when they do pen they often do negligable damage. I hit an IS-3 in the back of the turret yesterday, ammo didn't blow up and the round was completely stopped by his shells, meaning there was no damage whatsoever. I tried again slightly to the left to hit the gunner, but no pen this time... managed to get him by hitting the ammo again however.

Like I said, not the greatest. It also sucks because I can barely see what I'm shooting at, the lines on the sight are that close/the optic zoom sucks. However, it should be mentioned that on maps like Kursk, I can engage the enemy more quickly, and destroy them far more easily than they can destroy me due to the long range capability. Otherwise, I get stomped by T-54's very regularly, because so many maps are CQC. It also turns like a brick, and is slow at accelerating and is awful for retaining energy over bumps or turns.

I can't recommend it in it's current state, but I will say it's a nice tank purely to look at. Hopefully APDS will get a buff at some point, or HESH will.

Nice to know. I want to grind it out for when the Chieftain comes out but I was not sure if it was worth using. I like that my Conqueror can pen and due damage due to the larger round, but I prefer a faster fire rate in Tier V over size. It's just a pain to grind out using the Conqueror due to all the T-54's and the squished sight but the armor on the turret is nice (but does not help when I am surrounded by 3 T-54's and nobody wants to help). I guess I'll grind out the Falcon and maybe the Conway when 1.57 drops. (Is the optic zoom that bad on the Centurion Mk.10? I would expect a good zoom being a post war tank with the L7A1.)

It's the same as all others, 3.5x zoom, when it ideally needs a huge amount more just to see the target you're trying to hit. Due to the squashed sight, you also start suffering from miniscule adjustment syndrome, where you really struggle to adjust for the vertical because you move it slightly too much and it will go miles over.

Oh, and that's also the reason I went for it first.. wanted the Chieften to be easy to get once it comes out. I also really want the Conquerer, just so I can take a hit every now and then.. Centurion mk. 10 really is a paper tank with bad ammo.

I know the squished sight all to well. I can usually land the first shot with my Conqueror due to the squished sight, but I can't aim for weakspots because all I can see is that my sight is on the target. But the only tank that causes that problem is the IS-4M which I can't seem to pen the front of.

Don't believe in its armor either. The hull is god awful and the turret is pure RNG. I have people pen it with APHE rounds more often then it should at 500m+. It did used to be worse (as AI BT-5's could even pen it) but it is a bit better after they fixed it. But I still can't even recoment it. Its so large that you are the first target for shells that usually pen the front (even though it was designed to stop Soviet 100mm AP shells) and despite it firing 120mm APDS, spalling is still minimal.

It is the best sniper tank out that, but I almost never get maps where I can use that advantage. The 2 .30 cals are decent for scaring off aircraft and the top is quite armored (still wont stop 30mm HVAP or 50mm though) and the turret traverse and overall speed are very good for such a large and heavy tank. Either way, I just want my Falcon so I can fire 30mm APDS-T at enemy tanks :special:

Next thing on the list after the Chieften or the Conquerer, whichever one I unlock first and find the money for, cruising at 570k and making consistent losses of money due to 5k repair costs in the Centurion.. need like 2 kills, or a kill and a cap to keep up with that repair cost :s

Shame to hear that the Conq is so bad, however, I just had a thought - do you squad up with anyone? And if not, possibly with me? Surely two APDS firing British tanks is better than one ;)

Ahem, back on topic..
So, personal opinion, but I think the 85mm is really, really good. You can hit in the general area you want to damage, and do loads of damage, unlike American with the solid slugs who have to snipe stuff and generally do not one hit anything. The IS-1 also has moderate armour, but it's the main gun that makes it good, despite being sluggish. But what would you expect? It's a heavy tank after all.
