This normally happens when they change the BR on something. Usually, if you already had it researched, you can still buy it and fly it. BUT..you can't research any further up that line until you go back and research the plane that was moved down a notch.
USUALLY that's how it works.

Researching that took all of.... 30-50 minutes?
Example, I have an F7F, and just started researching the F2H, despite not owning either of the F8F bearcats. I also had not yet researched any of the newer P38's untill last night (just got the E model through Endurring Confrontation last night).
I supose its possible that you might have issues, but from my personal experiance its improbable. I have unlocked many planes and crewed them in after purchase despite having 1 or 2 or even 3 planes above it not yet researched.
Here is my US Research tree showing the fragmented line up. It used to be much worse but I have been working on filling it out over the past month or so (used to not have either of the SB2C's, the F3F, the TBD, or the 38e, all recently unlocked and crewed).

As you can see my next planned purchase will be my F2H, and despite not owning either bearcat I can crew my F7.
The only time I have run into an issue with researching a plane was when I lacked the required number of planes in the previous tier. Perhaps I have just been lucky in how they have been layered after updates or soemthing.
I'm currently talking about one of the first Focke Wulfs in the third column for the Germans. I didn't research any of the first 2-3 planes and all of a sudden this one was unlocked after purchasing the Yak from the premium list.
I'm tier 4 in Americans and this never happened . Very confused I guess I won't know for sure until it's researched
Worst case is you research it and then have to wait untill you do a few others before you crew it. If you are talking low levl planes it wont take you long either way.
Play some Endurring Confrontation if you know enough to run Sim and rack up some major RP. I got into two matches last night where I made over 12k RP in a single game. Complettly unlocked two mid tier planes (SB2C and P38E) plus a decent chunk into my F2H.
If you get similar scores you will have your low tier craft unlocked stupid fast :)
Ahhhh very cool, I've mostly done AB but I love this game and want to learn more about flying in the more hardcore modes, so I will definitely check out your tip
